Take a journey with us traveling slowly through the wilder parts of KwaZulu Natal, where all the fascinating locations are within short distance of one another and driving is limited. You will visit various wilderness areas, coastal stretches and some cultural hotspots that each offer unique experiences and promise an expedition to be remembered. This tour includes participation camping. Meaning guests will have to assist with basic camp chores.
On your arrival day, be welcomed by your guide at King Shaka International Airport, Durban. Transfer to the beachfront where you'll check in, relax, and enjoy a wonderful buffet dinner at the Elangeni Hotel.
Leave Durban in the morning at 09h00, after breakfast at your hotel, buffet style. We travel through sugar cane fields and rural homesteads to Hluhluwe/iMfolozi Game Reserve. We spend three nights within the iMfolozi Wilderness area, devoid of any infrastructure and 30 000ha of wild bush teeming with wildlife. On trail with two experienced guides that lead us in search of wildlife sightings and who cater and prepare everything around the campsite. Rising early in the morning, we enjoy breakfast and pack up camp. From here we walk ancient wildlife paths in search of all the game species. It is one of the most inspiration experiences to simply walk through primeval nature on foot, listening to the sounds of nature and learning of the interactions between landscape, fauna and flora. We continue our journey walking through the wilderness. In the evenings, we set up camp and the fire. Cooking dinner and enjoying in bush style, we sit around and listen to the sounds of the night and talk about the day and everything else. During the night, one must spend an hour on fire watch, making sure it doesn't die and keeping watch for your fellow trailists sleeping. Read more
We leave Hluhluwe/iMfolozi Game Reserve and head north into the Mkhuze area. Similarly, this Reserve is full of game (including the Big 5), and we spend our days on game drives, visiting bird hides overlooking waterholes where game comes to drink, picnic in the bush, and stay in luxury tented safari camps. We continue our journey in uMhuze, enjoying a typical day in the bush. Rising early, we head out on a game drive and visit the local hides to spot wildlife. Returning to camp, we enjoy a hearty breakfast and relax around camp during the heat of the day. Enjoy sitting at a local hide, a walk, swimming in the pool, or just chilling out around camp! From Mkhuze we travel further into the bush for three nights at one of South Africa's last remaining true wildernesses. Here, at Tembe Elephant Park, we find one of the last remaining populations of great Elephant tuskers and other fascinating wildlife. This community-owned Park is also a fantastic cultural experience. The lodge offers great dining, luxury tents, and is typical of a luxury safari. Read more
In one of the last remaining wildernesses in South Africa, we spend the day searching this pristine natural landscape for the Great Tuskers, and of course all the other wildlife such as lion, antelope, giraffe, and rhino. From here we travel for a day over to the coast, in this remote area of KwaZulu Natal, visiting Kosi Bay. A series of lakes eventually leads out through an estuary into the Indian Ocean. We are able to spend our morning exploring the beach and many of the fascinating places and activities on offer. We have the opportunity to snorkel, canoe, visit the local tribe's fishtraps, and just generally do what one does at the beach best, relax! We continue down the coast to our final stop, also within isiMangaliso Wetland Park, at the tiny seaside town of St. Lucia. Set alongside a massive estuary, and within pristine coastal bush, this piece of paradise puts the cherry on top of our tour.
During our stay, enjoy a sunset drive into the Reserve and a hippo croc boat cruise on the estuary. We enjoy dinner in the local town in the evenings (for own expense).
We finish off this fascinating tour by traveling slowly on the scenic route back to Durban. We head into the historical heart of Zululand, visiting Shakaland, where the traditions of the Zulu kings and people of old still hold. We enjoy local dancing, a cultural insight, and great food.
This was my first visit to Africa and to be honest...I had no idea what to expect and was a bit nervous. The trip turned out to be one that far exceeded my expectations with great memories that will last a lifetime. Booking a trip with Siya Phambile was great choice and one that I would make again.
