Cao Bang is located in Vietnam's rugged north near the Chinese border and is home to nine different ethnic minorities including the Tay, Nung, Dao, Lo Lo, Pa Then, and Hmong… This exciting new trek brings us into contact with these fascinating and colorful tribes. We spend four full days exploring the dramatic countryside in and around Cao Bang where we will stay as guests of the Tay and Red Dao tribes. Aside from its natural beauty the area is also very important to the Vietnamese people. Ho Chi Minh has had a hermit-like life in the caves of Pac Bo as he prepared his army for battle against the French.

Hanoi – Ba Be (270)

In the early morning, we depart to the North for seven hour drive which takes us through the flatlands of the Red River Delta up into the mountain areas. Stop at Thai Nguyen town to visit the Ethnology Museum of Thai Nguyen. Continuing the road No.3, as closer to Ba Be Lake, the scenery becomes more and more picturesque. We will have lunch at a local restaurant en-route. Arriving in Ba Be town by afternoon then check into our guest house. The rest of the time is free at our leisure. Ba Be (10km)

After breakfast we drive a short distance to the jetty where we board our private boat for a cruise along Nang River. We visit the Puong cave and the Dau Dang waterfall. Following lunch we continue cruising back current then turn to Ba Be Lake, before docking at the village of Bo Lu of Tay ethnic people. Home of the Tay minority people where we will spend the night. Cao Bang, 1 night

Ba Be – Cao Bang - Ban Gioc

This morning we drive 130km drive to Cao Bang. En route, we are passing numerous villages of H'mong, Zao, Tay and Nung ethnic minority people, all living in harmony. We will arrive at Cao Bang slightly before lunchtime and spend a little exploring this little town, and visiting the local market. After lunch we will transfer to Ban Gioc Water Fall which is the biggest water fall in Viet Nam and located in the border of Vietnam – China. In this water fall we have 2 options for swimming or rent a rafting bamboo (own your own fee) for floating around in a while and visit a cave in the top of the water fall where you can have some photos for souvenir. Cao Bang Trek: Ban Gioc - Qu

Have breakfast in Sai Gon - Ban Gioc restaurant. After breakfast we drive to Nguom Ngao Grotto and start exploring the 2,5 km inside the mountain, seeing thousands of stalactites and stalagmites in shape of thousands kind of animal, sometime we meet the river run along the grotto. Get out the beautiful grotte on the other side of the mountain, we get back in vehicle for transfering to Sai Gon Ban Gioc resort for early lunch. After lunch, we drive to Quoc Dan commune and start 7km trek to Quang Uyen townlet. On the trekking route, we see the hand-made paper in a village of Nung ethnic minority. Tonight we stay overnight in a homestay of Nung An minority. Have dinner and rice wine with the family. Note: Start the trekking tour with your local guide who will arrange your meals and assistant you along the trek. We will see our bus tonight so we only bring necessary things for 3 hour trek. Cao Bang Trek: Quang Uyen -

After a simple breakfast, we drive to Ta Lung border of Viet Nam - China. Stop enroute to visit Phuc Sen blacksmith village, the most well-known iron products for the land of rock mixing soils. Afterward we transfer to Ta Lung border, goodbye driver then starting our 15km trek to Ban La (in English name is La village) where inhabited by Tay ethnic minority. Cao Bang Trek: Ban La - Na M

Today we trek from La village to Na Nieng village, another Tay community. The trek is approximately 16km long and you will have opportunity for a challenge to cross many streams which is one of the cause that not be operated in rainy season. Cao Bang Trek: Na Mieng Village - Dong Khe (no vehicle) - Meet driver - Hanoi (230km)

Bidding our hosts farewell, we start another trekking day in 8km long through several minority hamlets. We stop for lunch at a local restaurant of Dong Khe, we will have opportunity to visit a lovely market where many ethnic minorities on dressing traditional customs are doing their business. (Trekking length: 8km) Back to our vehicle, we drive down hill to Lang Son town and via Dong King border market where all cheap Chinese’s product runs to Vietnam. We did a group tour through Saigon with Mr. Typhoon. He was very funny and informative. The tour showed up promptly to pick us up, and, we saw the main sights and attractions in HCMC. Mr. Typhoon was engaging, and, wanted to be sure that everyone was educated and had a good time. The pace of the activities was well timed out. The tour itself is exactly what it advertises to be, but, it's less immersive than some of the other tours offered (for example, a walking food tour or a cooking class). I would recommend it to get a feel for the city, and the tour company did an excellent job. Read more

Convenient booking, responsive staff, but very crowded group tours My friend and I used this tour group for 2 tours in Hanoi- Halong Bay and a city tour within Hanoi. Booking was convenient in that the staff were very responsive by email, though they do ask that you pay in person in advance of the trip, so we had to make our way to their office to pay them the day before our tour; otherwise you can pay online but you'd be charged a transaction fee of 3.5%. We paid extra to have them pick us up at our hotel which was far from the Old Quarter. However, on the way back from one of our tours, because of logistical issues, they couldn't drop us off directly at our hotel, even though this was the original agreement and we had paid extra for this. Instead they put us in a taxi to take us back to the hotel, which would have been fine except that they didn't use one of the more reputable taxi companies in Hanoi and instead we got a very sketchy taxi driver, which was what we were trying to avoid in the first place by paying the tour group extra to pick us up and drop us off directly at our hotel. Our tour guides spoke English well and seemed very nice. They definitely crammed A LOT of people into the group tours, though. For the Hanoi city tour, we had 14 people in what appeared to be a 12 seat van, and I think the tour guide was sitting on the floor of the van during the whole trip. So, expect to be in a big group if you choose to do group tours, though the group tours are considerably cheaper than the private tours, which is why we chose them. We did shop around a few tour groups prior to booking with this one, and it did seem that this company had competitive rates and their office location and staff seemed to be the most professional of the ones we considered. We booked a private tour (just the 2 of us) of the Cu Chi Tunnels through our hotel and Fabio was our guide. He was fantastic! Great English and very knowledgeable. He took us away from the crowds. We were so impressed with him that we booked a further 2 tours and specifically requested him as our guide. Nothing was too much trouble. We were able to use the time as we needed. He found us somewhere to get our laundry done, found us a bakery and delivered us to the train station after our full day Mekong Delta tour. Do yourself a favor and get Fabio!! Read more
