Hop from tree to tree with the Primates of Nyungwe Rainforest, Rwanda

This is a 5 days 4 nights privately guided tour of Rwanda which takes in all the main highlights the country has to offer. Starting in the colorful capital city, Kigali, before continuing to Nyungwe National Park for tracking some colobus monkeys and exploring the canopy of the Nyungwe Forest National Park where chimpanzee tracking is a huge attraction and which also gives you the chance to see l'Hoest's monkeys, Ruwenzori colobus monkey, grey-cheeked mangabeys and silver monkeys amongst other primates. Afterwards, you will continue to Kibuye (presnetly karongi) for a bit of relaxation on the picturesque shores of Lake Kivu.

ITINERARY

Arrival in Kigali

When you arrive, you'll be met by your private guide and 4WD who will be with you for the rest of your time in Rwanda. You will spend one night in Kigali for stretching and relaxation.

Nyungwe Forest

You’ll begin your journey through the beautiful countryside on the 4-5 hour journey to Nyungwe. You may stop at the National Museum in Butare along the way to stretch your legs, and learn a little of the history of this fascinating country. In the afternoon you'll approach the forest. It has a distinctly rainforest feel to it - and is home to 13 different primate species and about 75 species of mammals. The selling point of the lodges around the park is the absolutely fantastic views which they enjoys over the forest - on clear days you can even see as far as the Lake Kivu on the border with the DR Congo. Primates Tracking in Nyungwe

Spend this morning tracking colobus monkeys watching their acrobatic skills as they leap from tree to tree! Keep your eyes peeled for other primates including grey-cheeked mangabeys and l'Hoest's monkeys. In the afternoon take part in the canopy walk - a chance to see the forest from a whole other perspective! The whole walk is about 200m long, with 90m being completely suspended over the canopy - giving you a real bird-eye view of the tree tops. Read more

Kibuye-Kivu lake

After breakfast start your journey visiting the tea plantations in Gisakura then continue up the lake Kivu shores to Kibuye. This drive is absolutely stunning - winding roads hug the lake shore and hills making for some fantastic photo opportunities. You'll be met with huge smiles and waves from the local children as you pass by. Perhaps stop for lunch along the way so you can taste the local delicacy - goat kebabs! You'll arrive in the afternoon to spend three nights in one of the hotels of Kibuye. Some of those hotels are rustic and simple, but friendly and relaxing. In the evenings, sit and watch the sun set over the lake. Be sure to try some of their freshly caught tilapia - a specialty on the lodge's menu. During these days in Kibuye, you will have an opportunty to visit you will have the opportunity to visit the Bats Colony Island also known as the Napoleon Island in the lake Kivu( called so because it is shaped like the hat of Napoleon) and if time allows visit many other small islands in the Kivu lake. Kigali- farewell

In the morning your driver will meet you at the hotel and you'll start on your short journey back to Kigali . Wind your way through the beautiful countryside and you'll understand why they call Rwanda “the land of one thousand hills"!
