Luang Prabang – Full Day City Tour

Rise early this morning to join the local people of Luang Prabang in the calm pre-dawn to gain merit by making food offerings to the local monks on their daily alms rounds. As the procession of saffron robed monks passes by, people place a small serving of fresh sticky rice into their alms bowls. Luang Prabang – Pak Ou caves

Breakfast at hotel. Begin your day with a care free river boat trip up the Mekong River to the caves at Pak Ou. During the two hour journey the boat will pass by some small villages on the banks of the river, interestingly when the water level is low the women of these local villages line the banks panning for gold. The two caves at Pak Ou are Thamting and Thamphoumand and within these caves there are thousands of Buddha images of all styles and sizes. Lao people deposit their older Buddha images here when they become too fragile to leave out for everyday display making for an eerie yes fascinating site. After exploring the cave network re-board the boat and return down river with a final stop at the local whiskey village of Baan Xang Hai. Famous for its locally distilled rice whiskey “Lao Lao,” the villagers of Ban Xang Hai call it firewater and occasionally add scorpions or snakes to a bottle for effect. Here if you are feeling brave, you are able to sample some of the local firewater before returning to Luang Prabang. Lunch and dinner on own Overnight in Luang Prabang Read more

Breakfast at hotel Before leaving Vang Vieng for Vientiane, visit local market in Vang Vieng & Ban Houay Mor local market then continue to drive to Vientiane. Arrive Vientiane at noon. Afternoon, visit Vientiane’s oldest surviving temple, Wat Sisaket. Less well known by its full name Vat Sisaketsata Sahatsaham, the temple was constructed in 1818 and stands opposite the Presidential Palace. Altogether, the temple features over 6,800 Buddha images of varying sizes and materials which are all ritually cleansed at the time of the Lao New Year. Next, head to the former royal temple of the Lao monarchy, Ho Prakeo (now converted into a museum). The temple was built in 1565 by King Setthathirat to house a precious emerald Buddha and also serve as his personal place of worship. Although the original emerald Buddha was subsequently relocated to Bangkok’s Wat Phra Keo (Emerald Buddha Temple), Ho Prakeo contains some of Laos’ most impressive examples of Buddhist sculpture. Then, you will visit the That Luang Stupa, the most important national monument in Laos and a symbol of both the Buddhist religion and Lao sovereignty. Its full name, Pra Jedi Lokajulamani means “world precious sacred stupa” and an image of the main stupa appears on Laos’ national seal. The Great Stupa is designed to be ascended by the faithful and there are walkways around each level, with stairways between. Each level of the monument has different architectural features in which Buddhist doctrine is encoded. The various scriptures are meant to be contemplated as visitors walk around. Continue on to the center of Vientiane prefecture for a visit to Patuxai, the Victory Monument. Resembling the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, Patuxai incorporates the typical Lao motifs including Kinnari, the mythical bird-women. During the day, the monument can be climbed for an excellent vantage point of the city Lunch and dinner on own Overnight in Vientiane Read more

Overnight at Siem Reap

Siem Reap

Breakfast at hotel We travel to temple of Ta Prohm. This temple has been abandoned to the elements, a reminder that while empires rise and fall, the riotous power of nature marches on, oblivious to the dramas of human history. Left as it was ‘discovered’ by French explorer Henri Mouhout in 1860, the tentacle-like tree roots here are slowly strangling the surviving stones, man first conquering nature to create, nature later conquering man to destroy. We journey out to the Mother of all temples, Angkor Wat. Believed to be the world's largest religious building, this temple is the perfect fusion of symbolism and symmetry and a source of pride and strength to all Khmers. Built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II, this is most famous temple at Angkor. We stay at Angkor Wat to enjoy a picnic breakfast. As the crowds return to their hotels, we venture into Angkor Wat to enjoy its magnificence in peace and quiet. We begin by unraveling the mysteries of the bas-reliefs that tell of tales from Hindu mythology and of the glories of the Khmer empire. Stretching for almost one kilometre, these intricate carvings are a candidate for the world’s longest unbroken piece of art. This afternoon, we visit the immense walled city Angkor Thom that was the masterpiece of King Jayavarman VII. Following the occupation of Angkor by the Chams from 1177 to 1181, the new king decided to build an impregnable fortress at the heart of his empire. The scale is simply staggering and we are immediately overwhelmed by the audacity of Jayavarman on arrival at the city’s gates. The causeway is lined by an intricate bridge depicting the Churning of the Ocean of Milk from Hindu mythology in which the devas (gods) and asuras (devils) play tug of war with a naga (seven-headed serpent) to obtain the elixir of immortality. We begin our visit at the Terrace of the Leper King. This intricately carved platform was the royal crematorium and the statue that was originally thought to be the leper king is now believed to be Yama, the god of death. We continue along the Terrace of Elephants, originally used as a viewing gallery for the king to preside over parades, performances and traditional sports. At the southern end lies the Baphuon, once of the most beautiful temples at Angkor, dating from the reign of Uditayavarman 1 in the 11th century. It has undergone a massive renovation by the French and is now once again open for viewing. Our climax is the enigmatic and enchanting temple of the Bayon. At the exact centre of Angkor Thom, this is an eccentric expression of the creative genius and inflated ego of Cambodia’s most celebrated king. Its 54 towers are each topped off with the four faces of Avalokiteshvara (Buddha of Compassion), which bear more than a passing resemblance to the king himself. These colossal heads stare down from every side, exuding power and control with a hint of compassion, just the mix required to keep a hold on such a vast empire. Before clambering upwards, we unravel the mysteries of the bas-reliefs, with their intricate scenes of ancient battles against the Chams and their snapshot of daily life during the Angkor period. Breakfast at hotel We travel out to the mighty Tonle Sap Lake to visit the floating village of Chong Kneas. There are floating schools, floating shops, floating petrol stations, even floating karaoke bars. Many of the houses are floating fish farms with large pens of fish underneath. On the way back to Siem Reap, we call in at Les Artisans d’Angkor, a workshop to redevelop traditional Cambodian artisan skills. We head cooking class school in Siem Reap, gateway to the temples of Angkor. We spend some time learning the secrets of the Cambodian kitchen, a cuisine laced with subtle spices and tempting aromas. Choose from a selection of favourites, including meat, fish and vegetarian options. Once we finish the class, we enjoy the fruits of our labour, eating our very own creations. Take these recipes home and impress your friends with a Cambodian evening. Accommodation at hotel Read more

Siem Reap-Banteay Chhmar

Breakfast at hotel We travel northwest from Siem Reap to the incredible jungle temple of Banteay Chhmar, famous for its signature faces of Jayavarman VII. After travelling through some beautiful stretches of Cambodian countryside, we then continue to the main temple of Banteay Chhmar for a thorough exploration. We see the magnificent carvings of Lokesvara with 32 arms, nicknamed lok sam-pee (Mr 32) by Khmers, as well as the beautiful Hall of Dancers, similar to the famous Preah Khan. After clambering about among this sleeping giant, we continue to explore the outer complex, including the outer gate of Ta Prohm, like a smaller cousin of the impressive Angkor Thom gates and protected by a moat. We spend the night in our luxury tent close to the temple of Banteay Chhmar. Overnight at home stay Read more

Banteay Chhmar-Battambang

Breakfast at hotel We leave Banteay Chhmar and visit the enigmatic temple of Banteay Top. Here the central tower has collapsed, only to be rebuilt and resembles a precarious tower of building blocks. The interior includes original wooden supports, a rarity in this tropical climate. We continue south towards the trading town of Svay Sisophon, where we visit the local market before experiencing a local lunch. We arrive in Battambang and check into our hotel. We leave some free time to soak up the charm of this historic riverside city. There is also the opportunity to travel to the 11th century temple of Wat Ek Phnom to experience sunset. The winding road follows the Sangker River and passes by many traditional wooden homes, offering an authentic glimpse of rural Cambodia. We return to Battambang for the night. Battambang

Breakfast at hotel After breakfast, we travel to Wat Koh district to visit a local village and learn about rural life in Cambodia. We learn about the rice harvest, fruit farming and how the sugar palm is used. After our village visit, we board the bamboo train to travel back towards Battambang. These 'local trains' are bamboo platforms with wheels and they fly along the rail tracks offering great views of the surrounding countryside. After lunch in town, we travel to the hilltop temple of Wat Banan. The winding road follows the Sangker River and passes by many traditional wooden homes, offering an authentic glimpse of rural Cambodia. Arriving at the temple, we ascend to the summit and are rewarded with striking views of the surrounding plains. There are five towers here, leading some ambitious Battambang residents to claim it may have been the inspiration behind Angkor Wat. We continue to Phnom Sampeau, a sacred mountain dotted with interesting pagodas and stupas. There is also a moving memorial to Khmer Rouge victims who were thrown into one of the many caves that pepper this holy mountain. We then return to Battambang town for the night. Read more
