The Heart of Central America

From Colonial UNESCO-protected cities, flanked by enormous volcanoes, to smaller colonial towns whose charm you feel from the outset, this trip exposes you to the best of Central America. Mayan ruins will remind you how Indiana Jones felt, in the middle of the jungle surrounded by toucans, macaws and monkeys! Volcanoes dominate the region, though, and we’ll go on more than a few volcano hikes, absorb a ton of culture and give some rum a taste.

Meeting Day in Guatemala

Meet your fellow adventurers and tour leader at 6 pm at the joining hotel in Antigua. Be sure to have your insurance documents and passports available for presentation to your tour leader. After your tour briefing, you may want to go out together for dinner at one of the many renowned restaurants nearby. Overnight: at the joining hotel. Read more

Orientation of Suchitoto, El Salvador

Today we will leave Antigua around 8 am for Suchitoto, El Salvador. Our private bus takes us on an easy drive of about six hours, through a variety of landscapes, worthy of a few stops on the way. Take a wander through the cobblestone streets this afternoon, taking in some of the local art galleries, pupusas and local atmosphere that “Suchi” is famous for! Read more

Touring Surrounding areas of Suchitoto

Today is a free day for you to enjoy one of the many activities on offer! An early morning Kayak & Birding tour takes us onto the Quezalapa River Delta to see some of the 200 species of birds in this spectacular bird migration zone (min 4 people). The Los Tercios Waterfalls & Suchitoto town tour, with an English speaking guide, takes you to the waterfalls of Los Tercios, a unique formation of hexagonal slices of rock that looks almost like a modern piece of art and then an historical and cultural exposure of the town’s rich history, from the Dominican era to the civil war of the 1980’s (min. 4 people). A lovely afternoon boat ride on Lake Suchitlan to Bird Island gives you the opportunity to watch the migratory birds, and their nesting areas, with great views and, if you like, a cold beer or gaseosa across the lake, while enjoying some serious sunset gazing (min 6 people). A Cinquera walk option is possible instead of either the boat tour or Los Tercios & Suchitoto Town tour. This more active option takes us to a rural forested area, with some significant hiking that ends up near a waterfall with a large pool, followed by a guided visit of some interesting murals and the war museum (min 4 people). Travel to Copan, Honduras

After breakfast we leave for Copan, Honduras in our private vehicle. The drive will take around 5 hours. This is an easy travel day with a free afternoon planned to enjoy the small town of Copan!

Copan, Honduras

Copan Ruins and Macaw Mountain

This morning we take a walk from the centre of town to the site of Copan Ruins. Although you may have seen a few Mayan ruins on other trips, this site is different. It has something special, that you wouldn’t have seen yet! Our guided tour will take around 2 hours, and then we will have free time to explore the site. The afternoon is free to visit Macaw Mountain – a very special bird refuge, housing predominantly Scarlett Macaws (the national bird of Honduras), toucans, green and blue macaws and a variety of other species. It’s an interactive, well known and supported project! Alternatively, take in a coffee tour, enjoy the hot springs or pass the afternoon in our favourite café, Café San Rafael – home to locally produced cheeses, coffee and beers! Read more

Ferry to Roatan

We have an early start today, covering a lot of ground on our private bus. We pass through the cities of San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba to meet the ferry that will take us to the idyllic island of Roatan. Beautiful beaches, different cultures, diving and snorkelling all plentiful here! We will arrive in paradise in time for a seafood dinner! Read more

Roatan, Honduras

Beach Day or go exploring

Today is your free day to do the things that people do in paradise! Walk from West End to West Bay, take in the gorgeous sea views while sipping on a ‘monkey lala’.

Island Tour of Roatan

Today we are going to be escorted around the island by our good friend Cleve! From one end to the other, Cleve takes us on a trip showcasing ‘his’ island. You will be taken aback just to see how many different cultures inhabit such a small island. A fun, cultural and enriching day!

Private vehicle to Leon

An early departure sees us in a private vehicle to the airport in Roatan, boarding a small aircraft for our flight to Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. From there, our private vehicle will be waiting to take us to Leon, Nicaragua. The drive takes us through the heart of Honduras, filled with locals going about their daily lives. But, to us, it may seem intriguing, for example, when we see enormous iguanas being sold roadside or chicken buses packed to the brim with people just going about their every day lives. After the border formalities, we drive for about two more hours to Leon. After checking in to our hotel, we will meet for dinner and then have the option of taking part in rum tasting: Nicaragua is home to some of the world’s best rum! Read more

Volcano Touring and boarding

What an epic day we have lined up today! About 8am we will leave the hotel and drive approximately 45 minutes to the ranger station of Cerro Negro Volcano. It’s Central America’s youngest volcano, and still active. After an orientation we will transfer to the base of our 45-minute to 1-hour hike to the top. If you are boarding down, you will be carrying your own board, unless you pay a small amount to have a porter carry it up. Once there, we will walk around the crater for some great photos. Then it’s back to the edge to suit up and make our way down. Boarding down takes around 5 minutes, and walking down around 15 minutes. In the afternoon, we will depart for the Telica Twilight tour. Our 4WD vehicle will take us past small villages and up, up, up until we can’t drive any more. From there, we will receive a safety briefing as Telica is very active. Cameras at the ready, our hike is almost 1-hour, with some wonderful views back to Leon, Volcano Cerro Negro, San Cristobal and more. We will check out the crater at sunset, catching a glimpse of the hot lava. The walk back down to our vehicle will be by flashlight before the drive back to Leon. Read more

From Leon to Granada

Today we have a little time in the morning for you to enjoy the city of Leon before our noon departure. We’re headed for Granada, a 2.5-hour drive on our private bus, on the shores of gigantic Lake Nicaragua. This is an easy travel day. After check-in at our hotel, we will take an orientation tour of this classic colonial city. We will also pass by a tour office for those wishing to book tomorrow’s tours. Lake tours (by boat or kayak), volcano hiking, zip lining and more is on offer! We will meet around 7pm for an entertaining dinner! Read more

Granada, Nicaragua

Tour Granada & Masaya Volcano

For most of today, you will enjoy the tours you booked yesterday, explore this colonial town further, or even hang out on the beach. But mid-afternoon, we will all reconnect because we are heading to Masaya Volcano for some serious lava spotting!

Granada to Ometepe Island

We will depart our Granada hotel this morning and head to the bus terminal. If you haven’t been on a chicken bus yet, it’s a must do and this is the perfect one! An hour and 45 minutes of local transport will take us to the town of Rivas, and through the market. Our taxis will be waiting to transport us to the ferry. Enjoy a one-hour ferry ride, arriving in Ometepe at our hotel in the early afternoon. This afternoon is a great opportunity to relax by the lake, in the pool, or in a hammock. We will meet up for local cocktails followed by dinner at your choice of local restaurant. Read more

Ometepe Island, Nicaragua

Volcano Conception or Volcano Maderas

By this time you would have made the decision whether you want to tackle Volcano Conception or Volcano Maderas. Maderas is the easier of the two, but by no means easy. Your tour leader can give you more specific information on these two beauties! We will meet tonight around 6.30pm to fill in Immigration and Customs papers for our border crossing tomorrow! Cross into Costa Rica

Do you know the way to San Jose? Today we have an early departure to avoid border traffic and try to ensure a quick trip to San Jose, Costa Rica. We travel back to the ferry in our own bus, then once off the ferry another private bus will be waiting to take us to San Jose. If we’re lucky, we’ll get through the border quickly (why else did we get up so early?) Once the border formalities are done, San Jose is just 5 hours away, a comfortable and picturesque journey that will see us go from sea level into the mountainous center of Costa Rica. Read more

Andrea, Canada

We saw so much wildlife, & the fact that local guides were at no extra cost made a big difference to the things we saw. Other people without local guides walk right past things that our guides showed us, also very helpful getting great photos. Our tour guide was fabulous. Accommodations were great!

Kelly Brewer, Australia

I recently returned from a trip to Costa Rica and am beyond satisfied with the service provided. Everything was super straightforward and we were well looked after from the second we booked our trip. We had really lovely accommodation, reliable transport that ran on time and some delicious meals...
