Arrive at Kamuzu International Airport and be met by your guide. Travel North to Ntchisi for your first night's accommodation. Ntchisi Forest sits on the escarpment of the East African Rift Valley and is some of Malawi's last remaining indigenous rain forest. Guests can relax whilst enjoying stunning mountain and Lake views, experience the warm-heart hospitality of a part of rural Malawi where tourists are still a rarity, and enjoy walking. There are trails that guests who are able to bring their own bikes can enjoy biking in the beautiful scenery. Rare birds and beautiful orchids are abundant and there’s always a strong possibility that you'll see Samango monkeys, baboons, antelope and hyenas near the lodge. The lodge itself is an historical colonial building dating from 1914 (making it one of Malawi's oldest buildings) so it is ideal for cosy evenings relaxing by a roaring log fire and soaking up the old-world charm. Depart Ntchisi soon after breakfast and travel further North to Viphya Plateau. Luwawa Forest Lodge is located in the Viphya Mountains and at 5500 ft (1700m) above sea level and is malaria and bilharzia free! The lodge works in close partnership with members of surrounding villages and is involved in activities such as soap production using Aloe Vera, which is produced and grown locally, as well as peanut butter, bird-baths and flower pots. They have set up the Luwawa Trust, which aims to assist local communities adjacent to the South Viphya and Perekezi Forest Reserve in collaborative management and benefit sharing from this protected area. Leave Viphya Plateau early (soon after breakfast) and travel to Nyika National Park by road. Nyika is Malawi’s largest park with an area of no less than 1250 sq miles (3200 sq km). The name, Nyika, means "where the water comes from" and it is one of Malawi’s most important rain catchment areas. At the heart of the park, averaging over 2000m in altitude lies Nyika Plateau. The montane grassland is rich in wildflowers throughout the seasons and is wonderful for trekking, as well as 4x4 excursions. The plateau vegetation attracts large numbers of antelope from the diminutive duiker to eland, roan and Burchell’s Zebra. The park has one of the highest densities of leopard in Central Africa and there are a number of species of smaller mammals such as warthog and bushpig. The open nature of the plateau offers excellent game viewing all year round and over the last few years a herd of altitude-loving elephants have even been seen on the high plateau. For the birdwatcher, the park has a lot to offer with over 400 recorded species including the rare Denham’s bustard, wattled crane and the red-winged francolin which is endemic to Nyika Arrive in Nyika late afternoon and check in at Chelinda Lodge.
