Overnights in Copan

Copán Ruinas

After breakfast we walk to the nearby archaeological park, which belongs to the most superb ones in the Mayan world. Inhabited for more than 2,000 years, its golden age was from the 5th to the 9th century when it far preceded other Mayan and European civilizations in its development of astronomy, sculpture, and writing. One of the highlights of Copán is the impressive hieroglyphic stairway, with over 2,500 hieroglyphs universally recognized as the most extensive hieroglyphic text of the ancient New World. This majestic construction is part of a temple that was built, at least in its final stage, by the fifteenth ruler of Copan in 755 A.C. Although not fully decoded, numerous studies have shown that the text narrates the dynastic history of Copán. We continue our exploration at Las Sepulturas, a residential and burial site providing valuable insights to the live of Copan's ruling elite. Read more

Copán Ruinas - Santa Rosa

In the morning we drive to Finca Santa Isabel, located about 20 miles from Copán. Our tour through the coffee plantation begins high in the mountains, at the plant nursery, where young plants are nurtured until they are ready to become a part of the Finca. From here we wander down the well-groomed trails that meander through the lush, green foliage of the rainforest canopy. We learn about the growing, harvesting, and processing from bean to cup. After having lunch at the Finca, we continue to Santa Rosa de Copán, the most important city in Western Honduras. The charming city centre, with its cobblestone streets and picturesque buildings, dates back to colonial times. After its foundation in 1705, the town soon became the centre of the tobacco production in Honduras thanks to its fertile soil and mild climate. Overnight in Santa Rosa de Copán. Read more

Santa Rosa - Tegucigalpa

We tour the town's colonial centre and visit the famous Flor de Copán tobacco factory (closed on Sundays). The factory produces about sixty very exclusive brands. During the traditional production process cigars are rolled by hand and covered by thin cedar wood, which characterizes the distinctive aroma of the Flor de Copán cigars. Nearly 50,000 handmade cigars are produced daily and sent to customers in Europe, America, China and Russia. Later we continue to Tegucigalpa. En route we stop at interesting places to stretch. The origin of Honduras' capital dates back to the 16th century and is linked to the discovery of silver deposits in the surrounding areas. This colonial and mining past is still palpable in the historic centre. Overnight in Tegucigalpa. Read more

Tegucigalpa - Danlí - Estelí

Today we drive to Danlí, which is known as the City of the Hills. The fertile soil of the surrounding hills is suitable for agricultural production. The region's economic mainstays are the cigar industry, cattle ranching, as well as coffee and corn production. Thousands of tons of tobacco leaves are harvested annually and then finely rolled up in the local factories. The result is finest cigars that have been recognized among the world's best. Danlí concentrates a great amount of cigar manufacturers exporting worldwide. We visit the Flor de Selva factory before we cross the Nicaraguan border and continue to Estelí, the capital of the cigar business in Nicaragua. Overnight in Estelí. Read more

Estelí - Granada

Located in the Nicaraguan north central highlands at a mean elevation of 844 m above sea level, Estelí enjoys a pleasant climate throughout most of the year. The surrounding areas are perfect for growing tobacco. After the Cuban Revolution in 1959 Estelí became a refuge for various Cuban cigar makers. Award winning cigars have made Estelí one of the most important cigar-producing cities in the world. We visit Plasencia, one of the high quality cigar factories and plantations that are located in the urban area. Later we transfer to Granada, located directly at the shore of Lake Nicaragua. Founded in 1524 Granada is the oldest colonial town in Nicaragua and said to be one of the most beautiful Central American towns. Overnight in Granada. Read more

Granada - Managua

Granada offers many colonial sites to explore. Stroll over the Plaza Central and get carried away by the vivid city life. On our tour through the historic centre we pass by old colonial houses and other important buildings like the San Francisco Convent or Guadeloupe Church. The cathedral, with its stunning yellow facade, is one of the highlights of the town. Late in the morning we continue to Managua, located on the southwestern shore of Lake Managua. The city was declared the national capital in 1852, after the title had shifted back and forth between León and Granada for various years. We visit a small manufactory where cigars are rolled before you are transferred to Managua airport on time for your international departure flight. Alternatively you are transferred to your hotel for another overnight in Managua. End of our services. For a small additional charge we transfer you back to San Pedro Sula. Read more
