Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Makgadikgadi, Nxai, Okavango, Moremi, Khwai, Savu

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve covers a large section of central Botswana. Its harsh, sprawling terrain is dominated by grasslands, home to wildlife such as giraffes, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs. There are several fossilized river valleys, including Deception Valley and Passage Valley, which offer basic campsites. Dirt tracks wind south through the reserve's remote landscapes to the Piper’s Pan area. The land is mostly flat and gently undulating covered with bush and grasses covering the sand dunes, and areas of larger trees. Many of the river valleys are fossilized with salt pans. Four fossilized rivers meander through the reserve including Deception Valley which began to form around 16,000 years ago. The Bushmen, or San, have inhabited the lands for thousands of years since they roamed the area as nomadic hunters.. Hundreds of Zebra congregate here to Makgadikgadi to drink and provide great photographic opportunities. There are numerous birds of prey in this area, vultures, owls and eagles galore. We will concentrate on game drives along the river which should be flowing still although it has a history of drying up. Hippos and Crocodiles occur here, and survived 17 years when the river was dry, until early 2009. White Rhino were released here several years ago, but are seldom seen.Nxai Pan National Park covers an area of 2,100 km2, and comprises several larger pans which were once ancient salt lakes. These larger pans are now grassed, and are scattered with islands of acacia trees, and smaller pans that fill with water during the rainy season - thus providing rich resources for wildlife.

MAKGADIKGADI PANS NATIONAL P

We drive 4 hours from Central Kalahari Game Reserve to Makgadikgadi Pans National Park an area of 3,900square km, where we spend a night in the Public Campsite, across the river from the village of Khumaga but separated by the Boteti River. Hundreds of Zebra congregate here to drink and provide great photographic opportunities. There are numerous birds of prey in this area, vultures, owls and eagles galore. NXAI PAN IN THE MAKGADIKGADI

After having our breakfast we drive 136km on the tar road before turning off and driving 32km to Nxai Pan, on a very sandy road. Part of the great Makgadikgadi complex, Nxai Pan National Park covers an area of 2,100 km2, and comprises several larger pans which were once ancient salt lakes. These larger pans are now grassed, and are scattered with islands of acacia trees, and smaller pans that fill with water during the rainy season - thus providing rich resources for wildlife. We spend a night, in an exclusive BOGA (Botswana Guides Association) site, away from other people. We will try and have you out there at 5.30am to look for Brown Hyena and see what else is around. Later in the day we will sit at the Waterhole, the only one for miles around and very busy, if the rains haven't started. Sunsets at the Waterhole can be spectacular, with animals silhouetted against the setting sun. We return to our camp after sunset, and enjoy great food and drinks around a fire. Read more

OKAVANGO DELTA

SAVUTI(CHOBE)

An interesting game drive takes us away of Moremi, traveling north via the Khwai River and the Mababe Depression to Savuti, our camp for a night. The Savuti area with wide open grassy plains and scattered rocky outcrops is the perfect area for large herds of elephants, zebra and wildebeest and giraffe families, not forgetting the many predators that follow them. As the Savuti area is vast we can opt for a full day trip or a combined morning and afternoon drive, this depending on where animals are concentrated. Your guide will advise you the day before so you can organize accordingly. The plains are always a highlight and the area is known for its great concentration of predators. We can also make a short climb to see some Bushman rock paintings, beautiful vistas from the hill, back in camp after sundown. We enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush and arrive in camp mid-afternoon in time to still make a short sundown drive. Our staff has again prepared a superb bush-dinner and the campfire will welcome us. CHOBE

Today we make a last game-drive in the area and then head north to the Chobe River. We pass some traditional villages along the road and have plenty possibilities for a "lunch with a view". Arrival in camp is around mid-afternoon and we still have time for a sunset drive along the river. This area has the largest population of elephants in the world and seeing several hundred a day is normal; expect them to visit the camp. We explore the Chobe River and make an extensive game-drive along its borders. The area really has one of the densest animal concentrations in Africa and expects to see many different species: roan antelope, sable antelope, puku, red lechwe, giraffe are commonly seen and the possibility of seeing lions - leopard - wild dogs is high, Chobe never disappoints. Lunch is served in camp and in the afternoon we make a shorter drive as this is the time when most animals come to the river to drink. After dinner we enjoy our last campfire of the safari. KASANE

We are just back from a 12 day adventure with BK and OB. There were 4 adults in our party. We we did Okavango Delta, Moremi, Savuti National Park and Chobe River. We had an AMAZING trip. We saw so many animals: lions, leopards, elephants, etc. BK was our guide while OB cooked all of the delicious meals. We were truly bush camping - but did have daily ''camp' showers. There is just NOTHING like experiencing Africa in a tent. At night we could hear all the wildlife all around us! I HIGHLY recommend this company. A few tips when planning your trip. BK and OB were TOP NOTCH!!! Read more

BK owns this small tour company and makes sure everything goes smoothly. He is a very knowledgeable and experienced guide. His wife, OB, is an excellent cook. We roughed it, and he expertly set up and broke down camp 3 days in a row. There was always hot water in the morning (this is a wonderful thing when you are camping), good hot showers and a nice wood fire. You don't have to camp.He can set up any sort of accommodations for you. For lunch we had sandwiches, which were actually quite a bit better than the fancier-seeming box lunches we got at lodges in the Serengeti. The truck was open, i.e., no windows to draw back, and we were surprised how much more immediate the safari seemed when there was nothing between you and the animals. We really liked this company. I also liked that we were putting money into the hands of a hard-working entrepreneur. Read more

My husband and I spent a week in Botswana with Odirile Safaris. We had the most amazing time of our lives. BK tailored our safari to include a scenic flight, nature walks, and a mokoro boat/ camping trip in the Okavango Delta. We camped in the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park with multiple daily game drives. BK was extremely knowledgeable. He knew how to approach animals in the safari vehicle so that we could see them engaging in natural behavior. He answered our multitude of questions about the wildlife and the environment with great depth of understanding. BK and Oris provided excellent food, wonderful hot coffee, warm water in the morning, hot showers in the afternoon, and delightful company. At night we could hear the sounds of elephants, hyenas, hippos, and impalas. During the day we saw a pride of lions as they approached a herd of giraffes. It was thrilling to watch the animals interact. We saw a pack of wild dogs trotting along the road and splitting into groups. BK explained that this is how they hunt. A water buck meandered through our camp site, followed by a lone wild dog. Although we had great experiences elsewhere in Africa, our Odirile Safari was by far the highlight. We didn't just "see" the animals, we watched them live. We are already enthusiastically planning our next adventure with BK and Odirile Safaris. Read more
