This tour specifically focuses on the highlands of the Chiapas-Guatemala Highlands Endemic Bird Area, where unique species of birds live in this land of the Maya. Arrive at La Aurora, Guatemala Airport, meet one of our leaders and transfer to Antigua Guatemala for accommodations. Antigua, Guatemala’s colonial capital until 1773 when it was destroyed by an earthquake. Antigua was once the cultural center of Central America, and now with its considerable charm, Spanish colonial architecture, and colorful Maya culture, it is a center for tourism. It is known for its silver and ceramics, and of course its coffee. Read more
Start the day by birding at 6:00 AM at Finca El Pilar, which includes a box breakfast. This farm is known for having a mix of dry valleys and a great highland forest as well as oaks, pines and wet cloud forest; they harbor some of the special species: Pacific Parakeet, Rufous Sabrewing, Green-throated Mountain-Gem, Amethyst-throated Hummingbird, Blue-throated Mot-mot, “Guatemalan” Northern Flicker, Gray-collared Becard, Black capped Swallow, Bushy-crested Jay, Rufous-browed Wren, Black and Rufous-collared robins/thrushes, Blue-and-white Mockingbird, Chestnut-sided Shrike-Vireo, Hooded Grosbeak, and Bar-winged Oriole. Afterwards, we go to lunch at a restaurant in Antigua and in the afternoon do a walking tour of the colonial city. At 8:30AM, you will be driven to Takalik Abaj (Archaeological site on the Pacific Coast) to look for more endemic species then have lunch. Afterwards you will be transferred to Finca El Patrocinio Natural Reserve, where you'll be able to explore the site. Included: B, L, D
Full day at the Reserve, walking on the trails, birdwatching and relaxing. Coffee tours of the plantation will be available with a full explanation of the coffee picking, toasting and packing process. Included: B, L, D
Early breakfast and at 5:30 am, you will be transferred to Fuentes Georginas (Natural Hot Springs) to bird. Lunch is on the way to Las Nubes Coffee Plantation to do more birding. Las Nubes is known for harvesting coffee for different international companies (Starbucks) and for the conservation of different natural areas that are the home for different endemic species, like Unicolor jay, pink headed warbler, black capped siskin, Blue crowned Motmot, Wine-throated Hummingbird. Wake up early in the morning to bird, then return for Breakfast and Lunch at the main house. Then have an afternoon transfer to Los Tarrales Coffee Farm and Natural Reserve, where you'll have a Guatemalan dinner. Included: B, L, D
Early breakfast; afterwards Jose, the best guide in Los Tarrales will be with you. You will be able to choose from 4 different trails: Las Pavas, La Rinconada, Horned Guan Trail and La Cumbre. Early morning breakfast at 6 am and then transfer to Panajachel to see one of the mos beautiful lakes in the world, Lake Atitlan. It is just above 5000 feet in elevation, nestled in the mountains. It seems that everywhere you look you see a volcanic peak! You'll do birding at the Maroposario, have lunch in the village and then transfer to Guatemala City; however, before arriving we stop at Rincon Suizo for a peek of the Pink-Headed Warbler.
