6 Days Amboseli-Lk. Naivasha-Masai Mara

Amboseli National Park provides the classic Hollywood image of Africa. Set in rolling savannah scenery it is dwarfed by the presence of the pink-tinged, snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro which, at 5,896 meters, is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and topped by one fifth of all the ice in Africa. Against this magnificent backdrop roam vast herds of elephant accompanied by a kaleidoscope of other fabulous beasts -lion, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, baboon, gazelle hippo and wildebeest to name but a few. There are also over 400 species of birds, all manner of reptilian, flora and fauna and some of the most soul-searing views in Africa.

On this day, we will leave our camp with packed picnic lunches for a full day game drive in the park. Wherever you travel within the park you will remain under the watchful gaze of the imposing Mount Kilimanjaro. The vast herds of elephants for which Amboseli is known, seem dwarfed by comparison. Lunch will be served at the Observation Hill, from where you can have spectacular bird’s eye view of most of the park. Naivasha is a beautiful shallow freshwater lake fringed by thick papyrus reeds. The waters of the lake draw great array of bird life to its shoreline. Buffalo wallow in the swamps, whilst the large hippo population laze their days in the shallows. Giraffe wander among the acacia, whilst the Colobus monkeys swing from the green canopies above. Lk. Naivasha- Masai Mara- 25

Breakfast will be followed by a departure drive to the Masai Mara. Ascending through the western wall of the Great Rift Valley floor, we reach arguably Kenya’s most celebrated natural attraction-The Masai Mara game reserve. A 1,500 sq. km slab of open Savannah dotted with acacia trees-the Kenyan section of the wildly beautiful Serengeti plains, teems with wildlife. Being in the Mara has been described by some authorities as ‘’ being in the New York of the natural world’’ You will spend the next 02 nights here to explore. The endless plains of East Africa are the setting of the World’s greatest spectacle-the pounding of over 6 million hooves! From the vast Serengeti plains to the Champagne coloured hills of Kenya’s Masai Mara. Over 1 million wildebeest, 300,000 Thompson gazelles and some 200,000 zebras relentlessly tracked by Africa’s greatest predators, migrate in a clockwise fashion over 1,800 miles each year in search of green pastures. This continual perilous trek in search of nature’s big green carpet involves no beginning or end to a wildebeest journey. Its life is an endless pilgrimage, a continual search of food, water and pasture. The only beginning is at birth. An estimated 400,000 wildebeest calves are born during a six week period early each year-usually between late January and Mid March. As for when to see this annual event, consider December to March (Serengeti) and July to October (Masai Mara) The Mara offers wildlife in such variety and abundance that it is difficult to believe: over 450 species of animals have been recorded here. You will easily see lions, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, giraffe, wildebeests, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, buffalo, leopard, many kinds of antelopes and elephant. It is in the Mara that perhaps the most spectacular event of the natural world takes place. This is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti (Tanzania) in search of water and pasture. Following on their heels are the predators of the savanna- lion, cheetah, wild dog, jackal, hyena and vultures. After lunch, we will have an introductory game drive in the reserve from 1630hours till dusk. AA Mara Lodge | Sentrim Mara Camp | Mara Sopa Lodge| Mara Leisure Camp/ Read more

Masai Mara- Full Day

Optional Balloon Safari before breakfast (extra 470$ pp, bookable before departure) The feeling is indescribable, crispness of the African air, chill in the wind that hits your face as your Mara hot air balloon gradually rises, smoothness in the exhale of your breath, and the excitement to see and learn more. One's physical presence can be felt on the plains of the Masai Mara when reading this. Pick up is from 4 am depending on the camp of stay. By 6.15 a.m. you are almost arriving at the hot air balloon site in the Masai Mara. As you approach the site, the balloon seems bigger than you expected, the experience is one that has never been visited, and you are about to have a trip of a lifetime. Up and away we go! At 6.30 a.m., the hot air balloon safari starts. The captain asks you to relax and experience the wonders under the African sky. As you finally start to get a grip on the elevation, an inner smile that resonates on one's face does not need an explanation. The wildebeest moving in large numbers across the Masai Mara plains, the beauty of the landscape when the rising sun's bright orange colors are displayed, the elephants at the water pool, and the gazelles and zebras scampering away, just if it was their first time to witness an alien object in the sky. By 7.30 a.m., one is very content with balloon safari, and it is almost touch down time. There is a celebration, and for those who prefer a toast, champagne is served, as hot breakfast in the bush is being prepared. The direction and duration of the balloon trip is dependent on the prevailing weather conditions. Optional balloon trips take the place of the morning game drive. Please note that ballooning is subject to weather conditions. Morning and afternoon game drive/ full day game drive with picnic lunches, explore the reserves’ amazingly high concentration of game. This game reserve is Kenya's finest wildlife sanctuary. 7-Day Victoria Falls, Chobe & Okavango Delta Safari - We had chosen this tour (or similar) the weekend before our departure - We sent several enquiries on Friday evening and we intended to fly on Tuesday. Matthew was one of the first to response to our message and he worked during the weekend to answer our numerous questions and requests (we had requested to cut off the Vic Falls part as we have other plans in the area). Finally we confirmed on Monday and off we go on Tuesday. We did not know what to expect. Everyone we met. i.e., the local agents arranged by Mathew (Mathew is based in Kenya and our destinations were Zimbabwe/ Zambia/ Botswana) were professional, patience and knowledgeable. They made sure our questions were answered and our transfers smooth. This is a good trip for us as we did not want to spend too much time in transfers and we thoroughly enjoyed Chobe (a popular National park) and Okavango Delta (we had 3 very peaceful walking safaris and mokoro ride). Accommodation recommendations were good - Chobe Safari Lodge and the Oddballs - You just have to tell Mathew your expectations and budgets and he would work it out for you even in short notice. We thank Mathew and his teams (obviously, he has good network in the continent). Highly recommended (both the tour and this agent). Read more
