Today, in a jeep tour, you'll discover the two most famous places of the island: Sete Cidades Lagoon, a giant crater with the Verde (Green) and Azul (Blue) lagoons together and Fogo Lagoon, with a stop in Caldeira Velha to relax in a small pool of warm water, surrounded by a lush forest of ferns.
In your guided tour, visit Vale das Furnas, with its fumaroles (calderas) of hot water, mud, medicinal waters and more than twenty thermal springs, Lagoa das Furnas where “cozido nas caldeiras” (mixed-meat stew) is made using the heat from the earth, and Terra Nostra Park, one of the most beautiful gardens in S. Early in the morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Faial Island. Transfer to the hotel. In the afternoon, if it's possible, do a whale watching. Start your jeep tour in the city of Horta with unbeatable views of the island of Pico and S. Jorge. With a local you'll discover all about the volcanic activity of the island but the most impressive sites to visit are Caldeira, a huge crater with about 2km in diameter and 400m deep, surrounded by blue hydrangeas and lush vegetation and Capelinhos Volcano, the place of the last volcanic eruption in the Azores during 1957 and 1958, which added new earth to the existing land. Pico is home to Portugal’s highest mountain. You'll take the ferry in the morning, where your local guide will meet you for your tour. The island is known by the "currais" (plots) which are stunning mosaics of black stone to cultivate the vines for its wine production, forming the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, declared World Heritage by UNESCO. You'll also be able to admire the Pico Mountain, with a cone of lava designated Piquinho, where you can get a view of much of the island. Read more
