The 50km2 national park protects an area of virgin rainforest, found just 20km north of Krabi. The park is full of scenic waterfalls, including the eleven-tiered Huay Toh waterfall, only 500 metres from the park headquarters. Continue on to visit Wat Tham Sua, a sprawling cave temple set on a hilltop that provides views for miles. The main hall of the temple is built into a long, shallow limestone cave at the temple’s entrance. There are also several smaller caves hiding Buddha images, statues, and altars. After breakfast, drive to Tham Le Khao Kob cave in the Huai Yot district, a wonderful an eco-tourism adventure spot. A stream runs through the cave and another two flow around the mountain creating a landscape like no other. Inside, observe the impressive stalagmite and stalactite formations as your guide leads you through some of the cave’s nooks and crannies. This visit is not for the faint-hearted, since, at times, you must lie down in the boat just to pass! After this memorable experience, continue your journey to Phatthalung, with a mouthwatering lunch provided at a local restaurant en route. Wake up and have breakfast at your hotel before your morning visit to Wat Phra Mahathat, considered the oldest temple in Thailand. Although uncertain, some say it could date back to the 11th century. Afterwards, continue to the shadow puppet museum and the old home of shadow puppet master Suchart Subsin to learn about the region’s shadow theatre culture. Then, travel towards Khao Luang National Park, known for its impactful mountain and forest trails, streams, waterfalls, and majestic scenery. The park surrounds the 1,835m peak of Khao Luang mountain, covered in lush, untouched forest, and home to a variety of bird species and a number of wild orchid varieties. Next, we go to the Khanom region and climb up the 300 stairs to the entrance of the Tham Khao Wang Tong cave, a limestone-iron ore cave with chambers full of beautiful and oddly shaped stalagmites and stalactites. Overall the tour was good. Hotel accommodations could be improved as we felt isolated in a couple of the hotel areas. There was free time a couple times with nowhere to go as the hotels were not close to anything.
We had fun and learned a lot about the country. The guide Charlie was very knowledgeable. Vehicle was comfortable and had wifi built it. Driving times were not too long and we stopped for breaks as needed. Hotels and the food provided were also very good.
