Travelling Around the South Island - Beaches, Fiords, Glaciers...

During this 16-day trip through the South Island, you will get to see many of the must-see spots and will have the opportunity to partake in a variety of activities such as hiking, kayaking, scenic flights or a cruise in a fjord. It all depends on you! You will also see many of the wide-ranging types of scenery New Zealand has to offer such as forests, beaches, mountains, glaciers and fjords, as well as a couple of cities!

Christchurch

Known as a “garden city”, Christchurch was heavily affected by an earthquake in February 2011 but the rebuild is in full swing and has brought a new vibrancy to this ever-changing city. While you stay here, you could take the time to check out the Antarctic Centre, where you will experience snow and ice, a storm, learn about life in modern day Antarctica and Scott base and hang out with Little Blue Penguins! One night in Christchurch

Christchurch - Akaroa

The area around Christchurch is very interesting: the Banks peninsula is full of picturesque bays, seaside villages, boutique galleries and cafes. The highlight of this peninsula is Akaroa, a historic French and British settlement nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano. Explore the village with its colonial architecture, galleries, craft stores, and cafés. Akaroa Harbour is the only place on the entire planet where you can get up close and personal with NZ's playful Hector's dolphins. Read more

One night in Akaroa

Akaroa - Kaikoura

Kaikoura is a nice seaside town that attracts many tourists. It was greatly affected by the earthquake of 2016 but has recovered quite well. It does have some interesting scars though: the earthquake actually elevated some rocks from under the water, so now you will see lines of rocky formations on the surface of the water going out the sea. Kaikoura

In Kaikoura you can do many things such as swimming with dolphins, whale-watching from a plane or a boat, or even just see some seals lying around on the beach. It is also a good place if you like walking: there is for example the Kaikoura Coast Track which takes you along the coast for a couple of hours. n Kaikoura you can do many things such as swimming with dolphins, whale-watching from a plane or a boat, or even just see some seals lying around on the beach. It is also a good place if you like walking: there is for example the Kaikoura Coast Track which takes you along the coast for a couple of hours. Read more

One night at Fox/Franz Josef

Kaikoura - Abel Tasman

Today you will drive west to Abel Tasman, where you will be able to take advantage of the beaches. On the way here, you will probably be driving along the Queen Charlotte Drive, which offers stunning views over the sound.

One night in Abel Tasman

Abel Tasman

Abel Tasman is the country's smallest National Park, but also one of the most popular and for good reason : it is the place to go for the beaches in the South Island! Unlike the North Island, there is less choice in terms of beaches so Abel Tasman is pretty much the first that springs to mind here. There are two walking tracks here : the beautiful coastal track and the inland track that takes you through the hilly centre of the park. You can explore the park on foot or by car but also by boat, or kayak if you want to get with the theme! Read more

One night in Abel Tasman

Abel Tasman - Punakaiki

A brief stop in Punakaiki will allow you to see the famous Pancake Rocks, and go for a walk on some of the surrounding tracks. You will also be going past the Buller Gorge as well as small towns such as Westport and Charleston, the site of a major Gold Rush in the 1860s.

One night in Punakaiki

Punakaiki - Glaciers

Here you will find Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. They are the most well-known glaciers in the country, however they have started retreating since around 2015, so it is now too dangerous to go hiking directly onto them. You can still go on a scenic flight or even land on the glaciers for some hiking if you wish! While you are here, you can check out (other than the glaciers of course) Lake Matheson and its stunning reflections of New Zealand's highest peaks : Aoraki (Mt Cook) and Mount Tasman. You can also find some hot pools in the middle of a rain-forest as well as some glowworms not far from Minehaha. Read more

One night in glaciers area

Glaciers - Queenstown

Queenstown, the capital of outdoor activities. Here you will be able to do such things as skydiving, jet boating, paragliding and much more! There is also some great scenery around the city, many of the landscapes in the area were actually used during the filming of many movies such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Read more

One night in Queenstown

Queenstown - Te Anau

Te Anau is your stop for checking out the fiordlands. This region is completely cut off from the cities of New Zealand, and is a great spot to get your fill of nature! The main thing most tourists come here to do is a cruise on the Milford Sound: it is the most famous cruise of the country and a beautiful thing to behold whether it be a nice sunny day, or when it is raining because that is when you get to see waterfalls appearing on the sides of the fiord (which has a very high probability of happening in the region, as it rains 200 days a year). One night in Te Anau

Te Anau

Despite the Milford Sound’s resounding success in tourism, there is another fjord we highly recommend: The Doubtful Sound. This Fjord is not so well-known but is 3 times larger and 10 times longer than the Milford Sound. We also recommend seeing it on an overnight cruise, which will let you see it in all its glory. There are of course other things to see and do in Te Anau, such as checking out the glow-worm caves and the national park where you will see the local wildlife! Read more

One night in Te Anau

Te Anau - Wanaka

Wanaka, a place where you will find diverse landscapes, lake, forest, mountains and glaciers! You will have the opportunity to do various activities here such as jet-boating, hiking, biking, wine tasting… But we highly recommend staying a couple of nights here even if just for the sights and great places that are ideal for walks in the middle of nature! One night in Wanaka

Wanaka

If you are a wine connoisseur, Wanaka will be especially interesting to you because it is one of New Zealand’s most important wine regions! You will find many places you can do some wine tasting if you wish, such as Mt Difficulty and Rippon Valley which are outstanding.

One night in Wanaka

Wanaka - Mt Cook

Visiting Mt Cook is one of the most recommended things to do while you’re here. After all, it is the highest mountain in the country! Mt Cook is also close to Lake Tekapo and the Tasman Glacier, the largest glacier in New Zealand. If you have the time you can explore the area, take in the sights, do some hiking or you could go one of many scenic flights which will allow you to see a lot of the surroundings from the air, the longest even going all the way to the West to show you the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers! If you are looking to hike, the Hooker Valley Track is the most popular track in the area. Read more

One night in Mt Cook

Mt Cook - Christchurch

Back to Christchurch for the end of your trip. Spending the night here is especially important if you are taking the flight early tomorrow morning. In any case, this allows you to check out anything you missed the last time you stay here!

One night in Christchurch

Christchurch - Departure

Today is the day you depart from Christchurch, the end of your journey. By now you have hopefully taken lots of pictures and made many new memories in New Zealand that will stay with you forever!
