10:00 – 11:00 Visit Echmiatsin and the museum, See the Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin, which is one of the oldest churches in the world. Originally known as the Holy Mother of God Church, it was first built
by Saint Gregory the Illuminator as a vaulted basilica in 301-303, when Armenia had just adopted Christianity as a state religion. The church was enlarged, notably in 480, 618 and 1658.
11:00 – 11:15 Drive to Zvartnots Temple
11:15 – 12:00 Visit the a complex of structures erected in the middle of the 7th century near Ejmiatsin. The complex consisted of the St. George temple or Zvartnots and the palace of Katholikos Nerses Ill. Zvartnots, was buiIt as Armenia’s main cathedral in 641—661.
The building is an example of a central-dome temple different in its appearance from the antique and Byzantine structures of this kind. Zvartnots was built at a time when much of Armenia was under Byzantine control or influence and during the early invasions of Armenia by the Muslim Arabs.
