Caribbean Culture to Guatemalan Vistas

From the warm, crystal clear Caribbean waters to venturing deep into a jungle cave to hiking a still-warm volcano, this trip has variety. Experience the Caribbean culture, sense history in the Mayan kingdoms where now only the howler monkeys rule, and spend a lot of time on the water. With hot waterfalls to relax in and islands within lakes rimmed by volcanoes, let the tranquility take your breath away.

Playa del Carmen

Head for the Beaches

An early departure from Playa Del Carmen takes us first to Chetumal, where we will change to a local ‘chicken bus’ that will take us a further 20 minutes to the border of Belize. After the border formalities we will enjoy a few hours on this adventurous bus with lots of locals (an authentic cultural experience, to be sure). Enjoy the picturesque landscape of Belize, which is entirely different from Mexico. And now we are back to English for a few days! Our arrival time to Caye Caulker, aka “Paradise,” will be just in time for some rum punch and a walk to see the stunning sunsets that Caye Caulker is famous for! We will meet for dinner tonight to enjoy some island delights (lobster, shrimp, fish and more). Read more

Caye Caulker

Sailing & Water Sports Day

Today we head out with our friends at Raggamuffin Tours for a perfect day out on the water Either sailing or motoring, depending on the weather, we will take off for the first of four spectacular snorkelling sites. We will see sharks, rays, turtles, eels, loads of different fish, and, with some Belizean luck on our side, perhaps a Manatee or two (sea cow, or “dugong” as they are known also). Lunch is included, fresh ceviche and all the rum punch you can handle (after the last snorkelling site). A truly magical experience! Read more

Caye Caulker

Speed boat and transport to San Ignacio

We will have a leisurely departure of 11am from the hotel, leaving you a little more time to enjoy paradise, and perhaps pick up those Belizean souvenirs (“You’d better Belize it!”). A speedboat back to Belize City, then one of those adventurous chicken buses that Belize is known for, on a shorter trip than Day 3, to San Ignacio! A relaxed travelling day, perfect for enjoying that Belizean vibe. Read more

San Ignacio

Caves of Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM)

A departure of around 8.30 am we will head about an hour inland for the mysterious caves of Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), described by some as a Mayan Sacrificial Chamber. Don’t worry!–there won’t be any sacrifices today. On arrival, our adventure quickly begins with wading across three rivers, which at times can be well above your waist. We will then swim into the entrance and begin our way until we reach the chamber which is full of artefacts from days gone by. Alternative tours are Caracol Ruins or Cave Tubing (please note, not the ATM cave). Read more

San Ignacio

Lake Arenal and La Fortuna

Today we are giving you a free day to enjoy the area! There are lots of adventure activities to enjoy in this adventure-themed region. Or you can take a visit to an Iguana Sanctuary, learn to cook Belizean style, and more! You need to back at the hotel and ready to go by 4pm, for our departure to Guatemala. It’s a 20 minute drive to the border, then from there our private bus will be ready to take us to the gorgeous wee village of Flores – a small island surrounded by Lake Peten Itza. Read more

Tikal at sunrise & Jungle Walk

Today we are going to make it to the spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal for sunrise. A 3:30 am departure will see us drive almost an hour to the site. We will trek for about 30 minutes before making it to the base of Temple 4. From there, we will make the easy climb up to take our spot and wait for sunrise. During that wait, we will hear the jungle begin to wake up. Howler monkeys will sound like King Kong calling out to each other, Toucans will croak and parrots will squeal in the early morning mist rising above the jungle. When we have finished our tour in Tikal, we will stop for lunch, then make our way to Rio Dulce. It will be a drive of about five hours in our own private vehicle. Keep your eyes peeled along the way for wildlife. On our way to Rio Dulce, we will take a short detour, to Finca Paraiso for a quick dip in an exquisite hot waterfall. Our hotel tonight is on its own island, an incredible place to wake up and see the “Sweet River” (Rio Dulce) in all her glory! Read more

Rio Dulce

Boat trip to Livingston

A leisurely departure this morning (around 10 am) will take us on our boat trip to Livingston. But first we will head up river to the Castillo de San Felipe, for photos of the Fort and Lake Izabal. From there we will turn back down the Rio Dulce to The Gulfete and eventually into the Canyon of Rio Dulce, where the first Tarzan movie was filmed. You will see why when we head through. Please remember your camera for this trip, the photos are National Geographic worthy! In Livingston we will enjoy a light local lunch before returning to our island hotel for happy hour! The area specialty for dinner tonight is “Tapado,” a delicious seafood stew made with coconut milk! Read more

Rio Dolce

From Rio Dulce, to Lake Atitlan

Today we will make an early departure from Rio Dulce, to Lake Atitlan. We will start our driving through lush jungle type landscape, head through the desert plains, through Guatemala City and out and up into the highlands of Guatemala. Our day will end on arrival to Panajachel (the main town on Lake Atitlan) around 3pm. A picturesque drive ending up on an even more picturesque lake! Don’t trust us, this is what Aldous Huxley famously said in his travel book from 1934: Lake Como, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, but Atitlán is Como with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes. It really is too much of a good thing. Read more

Boat Tour of Lake Atitlan & San Juan

After breakfast we will head out on a tour of Lake Atitlan. The best way to tour this area is by boat! Our first stop will be Santa Catarina de Palopo, a small village with crafts and stunning views to the volcanos. From there we will head to Santiago, one of the bigger towns on the lake, which houses “Maximon,” a saint of sorts, to which locals offer gifts, to solve their issues—Intriguing, to say the least. After we have finished with “Maximon,” we head to the quiet, peaceful, art-and-coffee-filled village of San Juan. A perfect spot to pick up some locally produced goods. From there, we will head to Jaibalito for lunch at “Casa Del Mundo” – delicious locally grown food a plenty! From around 2pm, you will have some free time. Read more

Andrea, Canada

We saw so much wildlife, & the fact that local guides were at no extra cost made a big difference to the things we saw. Other people without local guides walk right past things that our guides showed us, also very helpful getting great photos. Our tour guide was fabulous. Accommodations were great!

Kelly Brewer, Australia

I recently returned from a trip to Costa Rica and am beyond satisfied with the service provided. Everything was super straightforward and we were well looked after from the second we booked our trip. We had really lovely accommodation, reliable transport that ran on time and some delicious meals...
