6 DAYS/ 5 NIGHTS SOUTHERN LAO EXPLORATION

As the gateway to southern Laos and a provincial capital, Pakse is typical of southern settlements with one or two wonderful if slightly tired old colonial buildings.Much like southern Laos itself, Pakse is characterised by a feeling that time has taken a detour and passed it by. The town is small and compact making it easy to explore by foot and with an afternoon in town you should head to the river for a sunset over the Mekong.

PAKSE – ARRIVAL – PAKSONG

Upon arrival at the airport, we head east to Pakse and onto the Bolaven Plateau. The Bolaven Plateau is known for its cooler temperature being located high above the Mekong Valley. Stop at a tea plantation, followed by a brief visit to Tad Fan Waterfall, a picturesque twin chute waterfall. Last stop is at a coffee plantation before arriving at your destination for the evening. PAKSONG

PAKSONG – JEEP TOUR EXPLORING THE COFFEE

After breakfast, we will spend the morning to explore the Coffee Trail of Bolaven Plateau. The coffee expert will come to pick you up at 08:00AM to start the adventure. After 30 minute drive, we will continue onto a dirt road, that can be bumpy, and muddy during the rainy season (from June to October), which will really make you feel exciting on your jumping jeep (this is the reason why the trail can only be done by a jeep) We arrive at the coffee farm at around 10:30. Here, you will have around 30 minute tour around the farm with the owner of the farm, Mr. Khamsone. You will learn all the steps of making some different type of coffee (Robusta, Arabia, Typica). From there, we will trekking though the plantation field with chilly, cabbage, or ginger to the cave where the locals used for refugee in 1973. We then drive back to Paksong, and stop along the way to enjoy the picnic at Tad Moun Waterfalls (you can also have the picnic lunch at the farm before driving back). You will arrive back to your hotel at around 14:00. Our jeep tour finishes and we change back to minivan After that, we will drive to Champasak via Pakse. Along the way, visit Tha Teng colourful ethnic minority food market. Next explore a couple of fascinating minority villages, Ban Bong Neua, an Alak village that boasts a sacrificial altar, and Ban Kokphung, a Katu village where they keep coffins under their houses. We arrive in champasak late afternoon. Overnight in Champasak Read more

CHAMPASAK

CHAMPASAK – WAT PHOU – BAN KHIET NGONG

After breakfast, we will visit the ruin of Wat Phou Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Wat Phou is a spectacular pre-Angkorian temple that sits amidst the rice fields and waterways of southern Laos. The temple was constructed in three levels: the bottom level is focused on the baray (water reservoir) and promenade, the second level features quadrangular pavilions and galleries of carvings, and the top level is the sanctuary itself. The temple was built by the rulers of the Khmer empire before the construction of Angkor Wat. The temple served as the most important economic and political centre of the region and still is one of the Lao people’s most revered temples. Pass through the small town of Champasak, where French colonial buildings offer a great contrast to Wat Phou. Continue south, stopping at the wood carving village of Ban Nong Bune. On arrival in the small Lao village of Ban Kiet Ngong you will have lunch (your own account) in a simple local restaurant. Ban Kiet Ngong is the starting point for your 90 minute elephant ride through the forest (2 people per elephant) and up to Mount Asa. This tour is part of a community-based tourism project developed to help the local villagers and provide conservation awareness. Along the way, you will have stunning views of the Xe Pian National Park which is settled between Champasak and Attapeu provinces. Stretching along the Mekong with many wetlands and unspoiled forest areas, this park offers a huge biodiversity with 29 recorded ecosystems. Birds species such as egrets, sarus crane and hornbill can occasionally be spotted and other inhabitants include wild elephant and gibbon. You are free for the rest of the day. BAN KHIET NGONG – 4000 ISLANDS

Following breakfast, we will drive further south to Ban Nakasang, and take the boat venturing the 4000 island area. Upon arrival, we explore the local peaceful villages of Ban Khone, where you will see an array of relics from the French colonial era and retrace the old colonial past, including old French colonial buildings and the remnants of the first Lao railway with its locomotive. We continue to discover the 4000 islands area by tuk tuk and visit the marvelous Liphi waterfall, also called the "Corridor of the Devil" one of the most beautiful waterfalls marking Lao border with Cambodia. If we are lucky, we may even see the rare freshwater Irrawaddy Mekong dolphin at Ban Hang Khone. Free for the rest of the day. Overnight in Khone Island Read more

Khone Island

KHONE ISLAND – KHONE PHAPHENG – DONE DAE

Afterwards, we will take a long-tail boat to Ban Nakasang; from there, we drive south to visit Khone Phapheng, which is considered the largest waterfall by volume in South East Asia; this is a really impressive near the Lao-Cambodian border, set within an area which is teeming with wildlife, making this area one of the most breathtaking destinations in Laos. From there, we will drive back to Champasak, and take the boat to Done Daeng, home to the lovely La Folie Lodge. Free for the rest of the day to relax. Overnight at La Folie Lodge Read more
