It's an excellent program for those people who loves the remotes areas and to stay away from a touristic places. The 4x4 Expedition includes many hours in a truck but it's the best way to see all the beauties of the high deserts of the Andes mountains.

Into the wine tour

We will start early in the morning at the place/hotel where you are staying, then we will drive up the mountain over Los Cardones National Park visiting the Enchanted Valley and we will keep going down to Calchaquí Valley , and we will take a provincial road to reach Seclantas village Then, we will continue over the National Road 40 (unpaved) and we will cross several old villages such as Molinos, and then 22 kms going up to the mountains to visit Estancia Colomé where we can have a lunch and visit the winery and museum James Turrell. After lunch, we get back to Molinos and we will keep driving on the Road 40 to a nice gorge on the way named Quebrada de Las Flechas or Arrows gorge. The name comes from the shape of white sandstones like arrows looking up the sky. It is a place like a moon pictures; the contrast in this part of the trip is amazing. Then, a couple of hours later, we will arrive in Cafayate city to relax at the hotel and you can have a nice dinner in one of the restaurants in front of the main square. Will be a long day: 342 kms. Visiting indian ruins

We start in Cafayate, after breakfast on the National Route 40 (RN40) and we will stop in Quilmes ruins in Tucumán province where we can visit the ruins guided by a local guy. Then, we keep going to Catamarca Province: Santa Maria city and Then Belén city where we will stop for lunch. After lunch, we will go to another important Indian (Inca) ruins: El Sinchal in Londres village where we can visit as well. Then…we will go on the road again until get the road (RN60) to Chile (San Francisco pass) through small villages like Copacabana, El Paso and Tinogasta village to get finally Fiambalá village where we will spend the night. Into the "altiplano"

The great adventure starts: After breakfast in Fiambalá’s hotel we will drive only 60 km of asphalt until we start to go on the creek bed. Yes, the path it’s on the creek and we will ford this creek 99 times…believe or not. At the end of the creek, will be a small village named: Las Papas (the potatoes) and in this place we will take a miner path up to the mountain to get the region named: Puna de Atacama, at 4.000 mts. above sea level in a volcanic landscape of white stones from the White volcano activity (now extinct), and the surprise will be a small lagoon where we can have our picnic. After lunch in the wild…we will drive over a volcanic path to get the “Pumice stone field” (Campo de Piedra Pómez) at the right time for great pictures. Then…we continue until get the main road to connect with Antofagasta de La Sierra village where we will spend the night. Will be a day of 250 kms of distance with 183 of miner’s path Read more

Over the salt flats

The day of the salt flats: early in the morning we start our journey heading to the first salt flat: Salar de Antofalla, where we will stop to visit a small village with the same name, then we continue into Salta Province and we will arrive to the south extreme of Arizaro Salt Flat and we will see the famous Cone hill, known as a: Cone of Arita where is a miner’s camp of gold. Then, we will drive over a miner’s path to connect a road 27 to get La Casualidad camp. It’s an abandon mine plant of Sulphur until the end of the 70’ and now its look like a ghost town. In this day we will have a pic nic as well, may be on the way to La Casualidad or when we arrive to Arita, depends how it’s the day. After that, we continue in the route 27 to cross the Arizaro salt flat and the get Tolar Grande village where we will spend the night. In total will be 367 kms with only 70 kms of asphalt. Read more

Last day on the high deserts

After leaving Tolar Grande, near by the village, we will visit the Ojos de Mar (Eyes of the Sea), are 3 small springs in the salt flat where we can find a Stromatolites. This are microorganism who produce oxygen in extreme environment conditions since 4.500 years ago, and there is only 3 of this places in the whole planet. Very interesting! Then we will see in the next 50 kms. A landscape red named Devil Desert and Devil Salt Flat, where we will stop many times to take pictures. This will be one of the most wonderful places to see in this trip. When we get a small village named Olacapato, we will stop to have a lunch in a restaurant of miners, then we continue our road, going down of the famous bridge of the Train to the Clouds to connect again the famous National Road 40 in Jujuy Province. The road goes over the foot hill of a big extinct volcano named Tuzgle and then we will arrive to Susques village where we will spend the night. To Humahuaca, cultural world heritage

Leaving Susques in the morning on asphalt road till 34 kms we will take the road 38 to go into Salta Province again, then 90 kms of gravel road going over small villages until get San Antonio de Los Cobres town. After have a lunch there, we continue heading to the highest pass of a road in America: Abra del Acay at 4.950 mts above sea level, then we will descent to the Calchaquí Valley visiting La Poma village on the way and finally arriving to Cachi where we will stay on the last day of the trip. The distance of this day will be 275 kms only with 34 of asphalt. Read more

Back to the beginning.

Relaxing day: on the morning time you can visit Cachi village for your own: the main square, the church and a museum. Then before midday we will start our trip back to Salta city going again over the National Park Los Cardones and descending The Cuesta del Obispo (bishop`s way). At lunch time, we will stop in El Carrill village to have a lunch in a local restaurant specialized in regional food. From there to the end of the trip: Salta City, just 1 hour.
