No matter you're looking for a spiritual journey or just a challenging trek, this extended tour of Tibet will take you to discover the ancient Tibetan culture, all the way to the foot of the Himalayas, where you'll stay at the highest monastery in the world. You'll then proceed to the far west of Tibet to set off on one of the most sacred and dreamt about pilgrimages in the world: 3 days trek around Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.

Arrival in Lhasa

You're warmly welcome to Tibet: 'Tashi Delek'! Get picked up at the airport or the train station and driven to your hotel in Lhasa. Here you can rest to acclimatize to the high altitude for the rest of the day. In the evening you're invited to a Tibetan style dinner!

Drepung Monastery - Sera Monastery

On the third day, we'll visit the two most important Gelugpa monasteries of Tibet, which to this day are renowned places of learning and training of scholars. If we're lucky, we may witness debating monks in the Sera Monastery. This is an old tradition that takes place in a garden near the assembly hall in the afternoon. Read more

Potala Palace - Jokhang Temple - Barkhor

In the morning we'll visit the famous Potala Palace and explore its stunning chapels. Residence of the Dalai Lamas until the 1959 Tibetan uprising, it's now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its magnificence and architectural wonder will leave you breathless. In the afternoon we'll visit the spiritual heart of Tibet, Johkang Temple, and its surrounding kora, Barkhor. Yamdrok Lake - Karola Glacier - Gyantse

On the fourth day of your tour, we'll drive from Lhasa to Shigatse. Along this beautiful road we'll pass through the green farmland of the Nyang Chu Valley, across the Gampala Pass (4790 m) to get to Yamdrok Lake and Karola Glacier. We will then continue westward to Gyantse, where we'll pay a visit to the local Kumbum. After the visit, we'll head to Shigatse, where we'll spend the night. Read more

Shigatse - New Tingri

In Shigatse we'll visit the famous Tashilhunpo Monastery, the largest monastery in Western Tibet and home to the Panchen Lama, the second most important spiritual leader of Tibet. We'll then make our way to New Tingri, driving past the highest pass on the Friendship Highway, Gyatso-La Pass (5220 m) that marks the entrance of the Everest National Park. Read more

On the sixth day, we'll head to Rongbuk Monastery, situated 8 km from the Everest Base Camp. Here we'll spend the night at Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse or in a provided tent, where you'll get stunning views of the Himalaya.

Everest Base Camp - Saga

We'll start the day watching the unforgettable sunrise from Rongbuk Monastery. We'll then either take a bus or hike a 4 km way to the Everest Base Camp, built to provide a campsite for climbers and travellers. Here amazing pictures of the highest peak of the world can be taken. We'll then hit the road again, driving past Old Tingri, once an important trading post where sherpas from Nepal and Tibet used to exchange goods, from where you can see Mt. Everest and Shisha Pangma (8027 m). We'll cross desolate sand dune plain and then descending into the Pelgu Tso Lake area we'll have a magnificent view of this stunning deep blue jewel. The road then follows a narrow gorge before climbing up to a pass and then dropping steeply over the Yarlung Tsangpo River. After this long drive, in the evening we'll reach Saga, an important stop-off for pilgrims and travellers on the way to Mt. Kailash. Read more

Lake Manasarovar - Darchen

On the eighth day of the tour, we'll drive from Saga to Darchen, making a small detour to stop at Lake Manasarovar. Snow capped mountains in the background, flock of swans gathering here as well as pilgrims praying; just strolling along the lakeside you'll feel the peace and spirituality of this untouched natural beauty. In the late afternoon we'll get to Darchen, small town at the foot of Mt. Kailash and starting point of the trek. Here your tour guide will assist you in preparing for the following three days of trekking as well as organizing porters and yaks or horses if necessary. Read more

Darchen - Drirapuk

The traditional Mt. Kailash pilgrimage starts off in Darchen. It's possible to take a shuttle bus to Sarshung, where porters will be waiting for you if required. In about two hours you'll reach the barren La-Chu Valley, inhabited by nomads. From here on the La-Chu River will lead you to Drirapuk Monastery. This last stretch offers some of the best landscapes of the entire kora. At Drirapuk Monastery you can find some very basic accommodation or you can camp for the night. Read more

Drirapuk - Dzultripuk

The second day is said to be the toughest. It's recommended to set off early in the morning to cross the Dolma-La Pass (5630 m) which is 6,5 km ahead. After resting at the peak, you'll descend a very steep trail to the La-Chu valley again. From here it takes another four hours to arrive to Dzultripuk Monastery, today’s final destination. You can camp here or spend the night in the monastery; please keep in mind that it only has a limited number of beds. Read more

Dzultripuk - Darchen

From the monastery the trail follows the river for about an hour and then climbs above it to enter a narrow canyon. Here you'll see holes and shrines gouged into the walls by pilgrims. The trail then emerges from the valley as the trek gets easier on the way back to Darchen (about three hours). Transfer to Darchen can be arranged. Read more
