The flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular mountain flights in the world, with a constantly changing panorama of some of the highest mountains on earth. This beautiful valley is home to many of Bhutan’s oldest monasteries and temples, and the country’s only International airport. After being welcomed with “Khadar” (traditional scarf), a BDA representative will provide you with the necessary assistance for completion of all immigration and customs formalities. Our first visit at Paro will be to visit the impressive Ta Dzong - the ancient watchtower above the Paro Dzong which now houses the National Museum. The museum houses some of the ancient Buddhist status besides housing finest thanka, scrolls. It also houses Bhutan animals, birds and other interesting Bhutan way of life. We will have lunch and then go to visit the popular Paro Dzong (known as Rimpung Dzong, meaning “heap of jewels”. The dzong was built in 1645 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. Paro Dzong is a very historical dzong. We will then visit one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, the famous Kyichu Lhakhang built in 7th century by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. Late in the evening, we will drive to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan for night halt. Read more
• Day Hike to Tango in the afternoon Visit Arts and Craft Schools • This massive statue of Shakyamuni measures in at a height of 51.5 meters, making it one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world. The statue is made of bronze and is gilded in gold. 125,000 smaller Buddha statues have been placed within the Buddha Dordenma statue, 100,000 8 inch tall and 25,000 12 inch tall statues respectively. Each of these thousands of Buddhas have also been cast in bronze and gilded. The throne that the Buddha Dordenma sits upon is a large meditation hall. The Buddha Dordenma is located atop a hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park and overlooks the Southern entrance to Thimphu Valley. We recommend you to drive early morning before the sunrise to be able to capture the golden rays of the panoramic view of the north east Himalayas. It would be worth to drive towards Dochula right before the dawn to shoot the stunning vistas, (assuming clear weather.) Enroute you will stop at Do chula Pass at 10,000ft/3,080m which offers the most spectacular view over the high peaks of Eastern Himalayas, including Bhutan’s highest mountain, GangkarPunsum, 24,770ft/7,550m (provided the day is clear). However skies are mostly clear during the month of October till February. Also of interest are the *DrukWangyel Lhakhang* built by Her Majesty the Queen of Bhutan. After breakfast at Dochula cafeteria, continue drive to Punakha where you will take a short hike to Chime Lhakhang (the fertility temple) built in 1499. It is an half an hour leisurely walk across a local village, The trail leads across rice fields to the tiny settlement of Pana where you may photograph local farmers at work and traditional farm houses. You will be served with picnic lunch near the temple which is located on a hill lock, after lunch visit the impressive Punakha Dzong also known as Palace of Happiness which is considered to be the most beautiful Dzong in Bhutan. After breakfast continue on to the Phobjikha Valley. Around the Phobjikha valley the only electricity is from solar or mini hydro plants (electricity will soon be common place in the valley all via underground cables, no overhead wires). Potatoes are this regions primary cash crop and are exported to India. Phobjikha is a glacial valley on the western slopes of the Black Mountains and is one of the most beautiful open valleys in Bhutan. It is also one of the most important wildlife preserves in the country and the winter home of the rare black-necked crane. While we are here why not stop and visit the Black Crane nature information centre, and the sacred Gangtey Monastery. After the breakfast drive we will be driving back to Paro via Thimphu (6 Hrs drive) and in the evening free time to explore Paro Valley.
After breakfast hike to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) Monastery, which is Bhutan's most famous monastery. Guru Rinpoche is said to have flown on the back of a tigress from SingyeDzong in Lhuntse to meditate in a cave where Taktsang Monastery now stands. It is perched on the edge of a steep cliff, about 900 meters above Paro Valley. Lunch will be served at Cafeteria restaurant located up on the mountain. After having explored the monastery, you will have back to Paro and on the way Visit KichuLhakahang.
