Your private guide, with his/her 4WD vehicle, meets you on arrival at Kigali Airport, either off an international flight, or after a safari elsewhere in Africa. Leaving the lively capital, you drive northwest through lush hills and bustling market towns for approximately 2 hours, to the stunning Volcanoes National Park – well known as the venue for Dian Fossey's pioneering studies of the mountain gorillas. Upon meeting you at your hotel on your second day in Rwanda as a way of acclimatization to the local weather, you will be taken to the famous Nkotsi village ( also known as Muko) 7kms southwest of Musanze. It is in this location where the Red Rocks camping and Hostel is found. At this village, you will be given an opportunity to work together with the locals on different activities such as beekeeping, banana beer production, basket weaving and traditional medicine crafting. In the afternoon if time allows it, you may go to visit the Musanze caves with bats as its major feature or decide to stay at your Hotel for relaxation . Start early on your first morning for a trip to track the golden monkeys. These primates are beautiful, endangered and more agile than the mountain gorillas. They live in bamboo thickets on the lower slopes of the mountains – and tracking them acclimatizes you perfectly to the slight altitude, before heading higher to the gorillas. Read more
Early in the morning, meet at the park headquarters for a briefing, and then hike up into the rainforest to a troop of magnificent mountain gorillas. Each troop has its own 24-hour guard, so their location is known. You usually have an hour with them, time to sit and observe them at very close quarters indeed. Because of the very close contact between gorillas and visitors (often as little as 7m), and the risk of passing on infections which are fatal for them, travelers who are ill will not be allowed on gorilla tracking trips. This tour will take you to the old “Quartier commercial” then to the Nyabugogo valley which is the main taxi park serving all four corners of the country. From Nyabugogo, this journey will continue to Nyamirambo famous for its various informal businesses. Turning on KN2 Ave you will drive to the once a small colonial outpost by Dr. Richard Kandt, the first German colonial resident of Rwanda. This house turned museum is the first modern building which marked in 1907 the Kigali City foundation. After the museum, your drive will take east on the way to the Presidential Palace Museum. The museum is a short way east of the airport a short while passed the Kanombe Military Hospital. This former presidential palace is located on the eastern outskirts of the city and is worth visiting given its “secret” rooms with a very strange presidential nightclub. The wreckage of the presidential plane where it fell down after being shot are still there – over the garden wall! Later in the afternoon, your guide will drive you to the Kigali Genocide Memorial centre. It is estimated that more than 250,000 victims are buried in this Memorial. Audio-guided, you will be led in different areas of the Memorial. You will also have the chance to visit the colorful Kimironko market and en route your driver/guide will make you visit the majestic Kigali Convention Centre. At the end of the tour, your driver will drop you off at the airport for your outbound flight back home or to your next destination. Read more
