As one arrives in Tupiza (2950 m), from the lost lagoons of Great Lipez, or accompanying one of the last caravans of llamas on "the salt road" that barter between the highlands and the central valleys, a pleasant feeling seizes you. In Tupiza, the soft light in the evening on the multicolored mountains, the shadows of the cactus, as much as the towers guarding the entrance to the winding canyons, the peasants slowly plodding home on horseback…
One of the easiest and shortest walks - 4 hours, 9 km round trip, 200m drop. 9:00 am departure from the hotel direction a fantastic red, deep and narrow canyon where a small river lows during the rainy season. On menu today: rock formations, canyons and other geological curiosities from the West part of Tupiza: Puerta del Diablo, valle de los Machos (rock formations), el cañón del Inca, la quebrada Seca, Cañón del Duende. At the exit of the canyon , we discover a beautiful valley of giant cactus where you can still find historic ruins of old houses occupied by the old Chichas of the pre-Inca indigenous culture. From Tupiza, we ascend the beautiful canyon until Palala Sillar where the diversity of landscapes (canyons, craters ...) make it a lunar spot with colors both warm and intense, and pasteles and pale. We continue our way up to desolated mining areas of Nazarenito, Chilcobija, Trapiche and San Pablo de Lipez (capital of the South Lipez ), before arriving in the late afternoon in Guadalupe where we spend the night. In the morning, we leave the village of Guadalupe for a short hike around the Guadualupe formations (also known as " Ciudad de Roma" ). The peak is bristling with numerous rocky penitents that are remind us of the Algerian Tassili. From the top, we discover an extraordinary landscape of eroded monumental rock formations whose tones vary from white to red passing through all shades of ocher and gray. Accompanied by your guide specialist of the area, you will see incredible rock formations of amazing forms: Catedrale, crocodile, condor, llama etc. The landscape is surrounded by several snow-capped volcanoes, including the wide range of Cerro Lípez ( 5930 m). We visit the ancient village of San Antonio del Nuevo Mundo. According to the legend, the village was suddenly abandoned because of a massive and unexplained invasion of viscachas (typical rodent of the area). We pass by the strange geological formation of the “Torreón”, clear a pass at an elevation of 4500 m.a.s.l., before descending to Laguna Morejón. We make a detour to the remote Laguna Celeste. Then get back on the road and head towards the village of Quetena. Cold lunch. All included. Night in a shelter (basic comfort). Night at the Doña Braulia accommodation (basic comfort). Read more
We will drive west to the Laguna Colorada. The intense red-brick color of this lagoon is due to the light sensitive phytoplancton present in its water. Excursion to the Sol de Mañana Geysers (el. 4850 m.a.s.l.) a volcanic crater from which sulfuric fumes and heavy water escape. After a breakfast in Polques we will drive around the Laguna Salada and across the Dali Desert (which indeed looks like one of his paintings). We will then reach the lagunas Blanca and Verde, at the base of the volcanoes Juriques and Licancabur (el. 5960 m.a.s.l.) at the end of the afternoon. A curious phenomenon can be seen there: when the wind rises up, the water of Laguna Verde changes into a spectacular emerald color. Return to the Laguna Colorada at the end of the afternoon. The track continues through the superb landscape of the Siloli Desert and its famous “árbol de piedra” where we can often spot some viscachas. Cold lunch. All included. We will drive north along the Chilean border on the scenic “route of the Jewels” which name is due to all the lagoons along its way: lagunas Honda, Ch’arkota, Hedionda, Cañapa, sanctuary to 3 varieties of flamingoes. Stop at the mirador of the volcano Ollague. This volcano is still active and contains one of the world’s highest open pit copper mines. The track then descends from 4200 to 3600 meters of altitude. We will cross the small Salar de Chiguana at the base of the volcano Tomasamil (el. 5900 m.a.s.l.), before reaching San Pedro de Quemez at the end of the day. Cold lunch. All included. A 2-hour trip from San Pedro will take us to the Salar de Uyuni (el. 3650 m.a.s.l.). The atmosphere is special: the horizon seems to not have any limits and the feeling overwhelming. We head north to the island of Incahuasi. This island of volcanic origin is covered with stromatolites (fossilized bacteria representing the first traces of life on earth) and giant cacti. On the way we visit the “Cave of the Galaxy” and its stalactites resembling lace. In the afternoon we head east towards Uyuni. On the way we visit the Salt Hotels (Closed since November 2001) and the salt exploitation of Colchani. Cold lunch. All included. Night at the Tambo Aymara hotel***. Read more

Nous voici de retour d'un séjour au Chili/Bolivie/Argentine. Un peu plus de 3 semaines de découvertes en découvertes.
