Return to Luang Prabang.
Visit of WAT XIENG THONG, "Temple of the royal city".
This temple is the most beautiful of Luang Phrabang and even of Laos. Built in 1560 by King Setthathirath, it is built close to the Mekong. With its roof that descends to the ground, it characterizes the architecture of Luang Phrabang, inherited from the period of the Kingdoms of Lang-Wang and Canna. Its rear façade is adorned with a beautiful mosaic of colored glass representing "the tree of life" on a red background. Next to the sanctuary is the red chapel whose exterior walls are adorned with mosaics of glass of Italian inspiration of the most beautiful effect. Inside, one can admire a lying Buddha, a rare jewel of the Lao statuary. Also worth seeing is the chapel, which houses the impressive royal funeral car of 10 m high.
Visit the temple of Wat Mai.
The roof of the Sim, made of five wooden panels, is a perfect example of the style of Luang Phrabang, remarkable for its decorated pillars and gilded doors that relate the legend of Vessantara the last incarnation of Buddha. Once a year the Pha Bang (Buddha) is exposed to Vat Mai.
You will notice, outside the Vat, two red wooden pillars that were used to tie the royal elephants.
