Mangroves are important because they serve as the buffer of coastal communities versus natural calamities such as strong winds, storm surges, tsunamis, and floods. Without healthy mangroves, the livelihood of communities that depend on fisheries and aquaculture will be put at grave risk. The mangrove
forest is also home to a lot of animal species such as the crab eating monkey and eagles, which are important to the eco-system. Langkawi means island of the reddish-brown eagle in colloquial Malay. The most evident species are the White-bellied Fish Eagle and Brahminy Kite Eagle which you can see during the tour.
Explore the Bat Cave which is inside a limestone cliff. The cave is so named because of the large population of Malaysian Fruit Bats that reside here. The stalactites and stalagmites are of spectacular and gigantic proportions, forming weird figures reminiscent of other worldly creatures.
Have a good close up to the ecology of the mangroves while gliding with your kayak through a smaller area in the mangrove jungle away from the larger rivers. Explore the amazing and mysterious mangrove forest by kayak, with an introduction and explanation on the mangrove and its eco-systems. Wildlife is abundant and if you are lucky, you might see long tail macaque monkeys, snakes, white-bellied sea eagles and brahminy kites, otters, birds and monitor lizards during this ride through the mangroves. You will be given a few mangrove seed pod to plant along the river bank to repopulate and thrive which will contribute to the sustainability of the mangrove.
