Phnom Penh– Kratie

We leave the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh we continue northeast to the bustling provincial city of Kompong Cham. En route, there is the chance to pause at Skuon, affectionately known as 'Spiderville', where it is possible to sample the local delicacy of deep fried tarantula. Next we visit Nokor Bachey temple is a cultural and historical site. It is located 2.2 kilometers from Kampong Cham provincial town along National Road 7, about 122 kilometers northeast of Phnom Penh. The temple was built in the middle of the 11th century, during the reign of Suryavarman II and King Ouphey dedecating to Brahmanism. The famous place of Nokor Bachey Temple, Kampong Cham is a wonderful place to visit in the country of Cambodia. Lunch will be at local restaurant. And then continue northeast to Kratie, a sleepy Mekong port and gateway to an encounter with the rare freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins that inhabit the upper reaches of the Mekong in Cambodia. Koh Trong- Kampi Dolphin poo

After breakfast, you catch the local ferry to Koh Trong Island tour Koh Trong Island in the middle of the Mekong that offers an extraordinary local experience. Pick up a local bicycle and start the 12km loop around the island. Observe the beautiful traditional wooden houses, taste pomelo fruit at a local home and visit a traditional pagoda. Plant a small tree nearby as part of the community initiative to keep the island green and continue to cycle towards the southern tip of the island. A Vietnamese style pagoda is situated on the southernmost tip from where a small floating village can be observed and you catch the local ferry head back to the mainland and visit the Kampi Dolphin pool. This is one of the 9 deep water pools in the Mekong that is home to the Mekong Dolphin. We board a local boat and cruise out into the mighty Mekong for a chance encounter with these gentle creatures. Viewing is commonplace, although it is easier to see the dolphins in the shallower waters of the dry season, than in the swollen river of the wet season. Kratie – Banlung

After breakfast in Kratie, We continue to the north on the new National Highway 7 towards Stung Treng. We stop for a local lunch along the way, before veering east towards the red earth of Rattanakiri. We cross the Srepok River along the way, the river depicted in the seminal war film Apocalypse Now, where Martin Sheen travels upriver into Cambodia in search of renegade Colonel Kurtz, played by Marlon Brando. We arrive in Banlung in time to enjoy the refreshing waters of the beautiful crater lake of Yeak Loam, set amid a pocket of lush jungle. The crystal clear water is cool and refreshing after the short walk and there may be some local children cooling off. We then return to Banlung and spend the night in a comfortable local hotel. Ethic village

We journey by road to the small town of Voen Sai on the banks of the San River, passing through some pristine stretches of forest along the way. We then take a boat up the river to the Tompuon village of Kachon, passing some beautiful sections of river along the way. Kachon is home to a traditional Tompuon burial ground complete with carved effigies of the deceased. Family groups are buried side by side and elaborate ceremonies held after a period of mourning. We then travel by road to a small Kreung village that still breeds working elephants. We saddle up and take a leisurely ride through the rubber plantations of Ratanakiri. We follow the course of a small river which our elephants eventually wade across and we descend to the base of Kaa Tien Waterfall. A superb horseshoe shaped waterfall set in the jungle, it is possible to clamber behind the falls and swim in the huge splash pool below. Some of the jungle vines hanging down from the gorge are strong enough for a swing and this is a great way to relax. We walk back to the Kreung village and return to Banlung by vehicle. Banlung –Sen Monorom

After breakfast, we leave behind the red earth of Rattanakiri and travel to Sen Monorom, Mondul Kiri, driving time takes about 2hours and half. Lunch will be at local restaurant. In the afternoon, leave Sen Monorom and travel to the nearby village of Phulung, 6km from town, where the Phnong villagers still raise working elephants. After exploring the village and learning a little about their local life, climb aboard your elephant and experience the traditional transport of Mondulkiri You will follow trails through the countryside passing scenic stretches of rapids and small waterfalls. Minority Villages &Waterfall

This morning head out West to the less visited area of Domrai Choan Village.This area offering a typical Mondulkiri experience as you follow clear trails used by the minority villagers to make your way through the lush forest. The walking is graded as moderate and should be fine for anyone with reasonable levels of fitness. Your local guide will lead you through the forest to Pnong Villages and explain about their traditional way of life and animist belief system. After working up a sweat there will be time to take a refreshing dip in Kbal Preah waterfall the perfect setting for a rest and maybe a picnic lunch. After lunch you continue making your way through the forest often passing villagers foraging in the forest or planting crops in the clearings. Amazing Elephant Trekking

Morning breakfast, then visit a minority house and learn about their elephants and listen to stories about elephants and how to train them. Travel by elephant-back into the jungle and see the rice farms and ford a river to arrive at the waterfall. Get off your elephant and look for good place to have lunch near the waterfall. Afterwards, go looking for the elephants in the jungle where they will be eating and bring them back to the waterfall. Take a swim at the waterfall and help to bathe the elephant in the river.
