Mayan & Caribbean Spirit

We start our trip in San Pedro Sula, the industrial capital then we transfer to Copan. In here you can visit the Archaeological Park of Copán, which is located a 30 minute walk from the village. Copán was the principal cultural centre of the Mayan empire. You depart from Copán Ruinas towards the Guatemalan Caribbean.

San Pedro Sula-Copán Ruinas

In the morning a Mesoamerica Travel representative will be waiting for you at your hotel and transfer you to the direct service bus to Copán. On the 3-hours drive to Copán you travel through beautiful countryside. A hotel reservation will be made for you in Copán. After a short walk you arrive at your hotel, located in the centre of the small town. Of course you can also take a taxi. The rest of the afternoon is left free to enjoy and explore the picturesque village of Copán. We suggest you to visit the little museum in the centre of the town, where you can find unique and original pieces from the archaeological park. 2 overnights in Copán Ruinas. Read more

Overnights in Copan

Copán Ruinas

This morning you visit with your local guide the Archaeological Park of Copán, which is located a 30 minute walk from the village. Copán was the principal cultural centre of the Mayan empire. In its development of sculpture, astronomy, and hieroglyphic writing it was far ahead of other larger and more powerful Mayan cities. Today, the archaeological park of Copan covers a six-hectare wooded area along the edge of the Río Copán and consists of two main sites: the ruins and the sepulchres. Visiting the ruins, you learn about the amazing 63-step stairway with over 2,500 hieroglyphs and the masterfully carved Stelae. If you like, you can visit Las Sepulturas in the afternoon. This was a residential and burial site of the Mayan nobles. Read more

Quirguá - Río Dulce

Your private Mesoamerica Travel Guide welcomes you around 09:00 am at the hotel. Together you depart from Copán Ruinas towards the Guatemalan Caribbean. On the way we visit the archaeological site Quiriguá. This medium-sized site was named UNESCO World Heritage in 1981 and is famous for an impressive series of stelae and sculpted calendars. One of the stelea is the tallest stone monument ever erected in the New World. It is 10 meters high and weighs 60 tons. We arrive at Río Dulce, an exceptionally rich ecological area, at mid afternoon. There is sufficient time to relax in the hotel, have a cold drink and enjoy the amazing view overlooking the river. 2 overnights in Río Dulce. Read more

Livingston - Río Dulce

This morning the adventure will take place by boat through one of our more prestige natural beauties: Río Dulce. During the 3-hours boat drive we pass the Chocon Machacas Biotope, which is a refugee for the rare manatees. The small village of Livingston is located at the Guatemalan Caribbean coast and famous for its exclusive mixture of cultures such as Garifuna, Afro-Caribbean, Maya and Ladino. As Livingston hasn't been connected to Guatemala's road network so far, it can only be reached by water. After an interesting excursion we return to our hotel in the afternoon, where you can relax at the pool or enjoy the view onto the river. Read more

Rio Dulce - Omoa - Tela

We continue through the Guatemalan Caribbean driving through scenic landscapes and banana plantations. After crossing the border with Honduras at Corinto, we reach the next Caribbean beach village, which is Omoa. Omoa is one of the oldest towns in Honduras. We visit the historical San Fernando Fortress built by the Spaniards to protect the coastline and ships from attacks by British pirates. The fortress offers a magnificent view of the bay and the Merendón mountain range. We proceed to Tela located at Honduras' Caribbean coast. Enjoy the Caribbean flair relaxing in a hammock among the shades of a coconut palm. The typical seafood prepared according to local recipes gets you in the mood for a delicious dinner. 2 overnights in Tela. Read more

Overnight in Tela

Today is left free to enjoy the atmosphere of Tela and its sandy beaches. Tela is famous for its history as a banana emporium. Since the late 19th century Honduras' economy was based on the cultivation and production of bananas. In 1914 Tela became an important port as headquarters of the Tela Railroad Company, a subsidiary of the United Fruit Company. After the Tela Railroad Company had left, tourism became more and more the economic engine of the town. Nowadays Tela is famous for its beaches and the beauty of its protected areas. Among Tela's protected areas are Punta Sal and Punta Izopo National Park, the Botanical Garden Lancetilla and Texiguat Wildlife Refuge. Optional activities can be organized. Read more
