DAY 1

Welcome to Beijing, China

Your unforgettable flavors discovery tour begins with your arrival in Beijing. Upon your arrival at the Beijing airport, your private guide and driver will meet and escort you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to relax and recover from jetlag.

DAY 2

Opulent Beijing

After breakfast, you will take a short stroll on Tiananmen Square, once the largest square in the world stretching a vast 440,000 square meters. And then discover the amazing Forbidden City with its palace complex of 9,999 buildings across 74 hectares, surrounded by a six meter deep moat and a ten meter wall. It gives new meaning to the word “epic”. Continue to admire the incredible Temple of Heaven and pay a visit to the Longjing Pearl Store this afternoon. In the evening, you will have a chance to taste the awesome Peking duck at the famous Quanjude Restaurant. DAY 3

Great Wall at Mutianyu

Today’s full day private tour will take you to the awesome Great Wall (Mutianyu section, about 1.5 hours drive), the 8th Wonder of the World. Walking on the venerable ramparts, you will amaze at the unbelievable constructions and surrounding landscapes. Continue to a visit to the Sacred Road, an imperial path lined with stone statues of Ming Dynasty. Read more

DAY 4

Old Beijing in Hutongs

Today you will come across the old Bejing by entering into the Hutongs, where you will have a leisurely walk into the local Beijingers’ daily life and try your hands at painting a facial make-up of Peking Opera on a paper model. After the trip, you will be transferred to the railway station for speed train to Xian. Upon your arrival at Xian, your private guide and driver will meet and escort you to your hotel. Read more

DAY 5

Terracotta Warriors, Xian

This morning you will visit the amazing Terracotta Warriors with over 6,000 painted life-size warriors and horses in battle-ranked formations and a Jade Gallery to indulge in the jade culture of China. Continue on to a walk on the top of the Ancient City Walls and it’s an ideal way to see the old city. Tour ends at the local Muslim Quarter composed of narrow alleys full of colors, smell, taste and sights. DAY 6

Home-made Dishes

Today you will set off to a welcoming local family for a truly unique experience of home-made dishes. If time permits, you can go to market with the host, and also visit the local Mahjong House to feel the Chinese leisure life. Enjoy a private airport transfer for flight to Chengdu. DAY 7

Chengdu - Culinary Capital

Your private guided tour today begins with a visiting to see the lovely giant panda in the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. You will enjoy this cheerful morning with this endangered and rare lovely bears. Followed by a trip to the Wenshu Temple where you can sit in its tea house for a cup of traditional Chinese tea. Sichuan Cuisine

Diversity of Shanghai

Shanghai is known as the most dynamic city in China. Embark on a private guided tour of the city highlights, including the Shanghai Museum, which presents different aspects of Chinese culture, a walk down the Bund along the Huangpu River and the lovely Nanjing Road. Later pay a visit to the Silk Workshop to learn how silk is made and buy some quality silk souvenirs as you wish and enjoy the panoramic view of Shanghai from the Shanghai World Financial Center. Local Food at Shanghai

This half day food walking tour combines food and culture of Shanghai. In the morning, you will first blend with local people doing morning exercises at the Fuxing Park, later, transfer to discover the Shanghai typical house - Stone Gate, which originates from the European style architecture with the combination of local cultural elements. Followed by walking to another local street where you can see different kinds of local street food and a small local market. Try some local dim sum as your lunch today. I was going to China for two weeks, and as my journey was partly business, partly leisure, I was looking for a company flexible enough to put together a really tailor-made tour. From the start, Odyssey proved to be just what I needed. I filled out the personalized form on the website, and Maggie Yang contacted me less than a day after. She suggested useful tweaks to my planned itinerary. From that moment on, communication was always positive, smooth and efficient.In total, I went from Chongqing to Chengdu and back; from Chongqing to Xi'an; from Xi'an to Shaolin; and from there to Beijing. All of these trips were by train. Now, I had never taken the train in China before, and I had heard some scare stories about how difficult it can be... But Maggie made it a breeze, booking and sending the tickets to me, and explaining in detail how to read them and how Chinese railway stations work. My first guide in Chengdu, Jim Xu, was wonderful! He was very knowledgeable and particularly welcoming. While he was only to take me to see the famous Sichuan opera, he went "the extra mile", as he also advised me on out-of-town visits (Qingchengshan, Dujiangyan, etc.) and actively helped me to book tickets at the best rate. Thanks to him, I made the most out of my time in Chengdu.A friend joined me in Xi'an, and we opted for seeing the city by ourselves, without a guide. (Another sign of our tour's flexibility here.) Conversely, we chose to visit the Shaolin Temple with a guide chosen by Odyssey Tours, Jerry Ma. He picked us up at the station, greeting us with good humor, much-needed cold bottles of water, and a wealth of information about Luoyang, Dengfeng and the Shaolin Temple. He made sure that we took the most out of our brief visit there. By the way, Dengfeng was the only city where we stayed at a hotel booked by Odyssey and not on our own; and I must say that it was a very good choice. The hotel was well-situated between kung fu schools, and minutes away by car from the dazzling Shaolin Zen Music Ritual show recommended by our guide.Let me add that when I had a problem with a hotel I had booked on my own (i.e. not through Odyssey) in Beijing, I contacted Maggie, who was able to sort it out. I much appreciated the personal attention I received throughout the trip as needed, and the swift response whenever I had a question or issue (24/7 service)!In sum, Odyssey Tours provides highly personal and flexible service, very useful pre-travel advice on practical matters such as local transportation, tip rates, etc., and has extremely clear, professional and friendly communication – by email, by phone, by mobile chat.
