ARRIVAL YANGON

Mingalabar and welcome to Myanmar! The former capital Yangon, also known as Rangoon, remains Myanmar largest city and continues to be the country's most important commercial hub and gateway for most of its international visitors. Upon arrival at the airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your guide who will take you to your hotel for check-in. You’ll start things off in the afternoon with a trip to Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda to see a 70-meter long reclining Buddha statue. Afterwards, you will continue uptown and make a quick stop by the Royal Lake located in Kandawgyi Park Catch a view of Karaweik Hall, a reproduction of a royal barge and enjoy a spectacular view of the Golden Shwedagon Pagoda. No Myanmar expedition can be considered truly great if it’s lacking a visit to the legendary Shwedagon Pagoda. Shwedagon is largely considered to be the most important religious site for the Burmese; most visitors report that the trip is extremely memorable and still etched into their minds. YANGON, 1 NIGHT

YANGON _ BAGAN

After enjoying your breakfast you will drive to the airport for your domestic flight to Bagan. Welcome to Bagan, known to be one of the greatest architectural sites in Asia. When Bagan was the center of Myanmar from the 11th to 13th centuries the monarchs built multitudes of massive stupas and pagodas. Your fist port of call will be an elevated temple with its panoramic views of the Bagan plains. From here you will have a glimpse at the Ananda Temple – one of the most exalted of Bagan’s temples.You will then continue to various other temples dotted around the temple plains to experience a variety of architectural styles in the area as well as the artistic wonder of the 9-14th centuries. Traveling amid the temples, you will get a taste of rural Bagan life in this “living museum” setting where farmers and families work amongst the monuments. OPTION: HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE OVER BAGAN The morning will start off with an exciting hot-air balloon ride above the Bagan countryside. You will observe one-of-a-kind views when the sun begins to rise over the Irrawaddy River and various stupas in the region. You’re simply not going to find many other opportunities like this on Earth. (Only available from October/November through March). This morning, you will be off to the vibrant Nyaung Oo Market, where the locals come to trade fresh produce and other goods daily. Afterwards, discover Old Bagan and visit the Shwezigon Pagoda. In the afternoon you will drive through Bagan’s countryside to the rustic village of Minnanthu. isolated. You will discover temples with their peculiar structural design. You will also take a time to head over to Kyat Kan Cave monastery. From here you will journey on by horse cart for an excursion that passes some of the tallest temples in Bagan. BAGAN _ PAKOKKU _ MONYWA

This morning you will board a local boat to Pakkoku for a relaxed, two-hour journey upriver. On the way – if time allows – you will stop at Kyauk Gu U Min temple on the eastern side of the river. The temple itself is built into the side of cliff and behind the main hall of the temple is access to a quiet and tranquil cave. Then continue to Pakokku. A quick stop at a local village will give you a chance to learn first-hand about the way of life and culture of these rural inhabitants. Once you’ve reached Monywa, which is best described as a characteristic Burmese town situated on the eastern banks of the Chindwin River, you will drive to your hotel to enjoy a relaxed evening. MONYWA, 1 NIGHT

MONYWA - POWINTAUNG – MANDALAY

Today you will drive to Mandalay (3.5 hour drive to Mandalay. You will cross the Chindwin River and first drive to Po Win Taung. This astonishing structure is composed of 947 sandstone caves that have been hollowed out of the surrounding hills and contains what is considered to be the best gathering of mural paintings and Buddhist statues in Southeast Asia. After your delightful visit to Po Win Taung, you will be whisked just a few hundred meters away, to Shwe Ba Taung. Many travelers enjoy spending their time exploring this fascinating site, the monasteries and temples are literally carved into the stony slender cliffs. On the way to Mandalay, you will have a stopover at Thanboddhay Pagoda, an enormous Buddhist temple that happens to be covered with more than 500,000 images of Buddha. You will also have enough time to stop by the Boditahtaung Pagoda which houses the biggest Buddha likeness in Myanmar, measuring in at 100m long and is 27m high. MANDALAY, 3 NIGHTS

SAGAING- AVA- AMARAPURA

The day will begin with an expedition to investigate the previous capitals of Amarapura, Ava and Sagaing. Cross the bridge over the Irrawaddy River to first reach Sagaing. Cross the bridge over the Irrawaddy River to first reach Sagaing Hill which is generally seen as the spiritual hub of Myanmar and claims residence to around 3,000 monks and nearly 100 meditation shrines. You’ll visit pagodas such as Swan Oo Pon Nya Shin, U Min Thone Sae and Taung Oo Maw. You’ll head over to a small pottery village which is recognized for manufacturing ubiquitous water pots to observe the tradesmen here applying their traditional methods for producing their goods. The afternoon’s activities will kick off with a visit to Ava, the standing capital from the 14th through the 18th centuries. Cross the small river by ferry and travel in a traditional horse and carriage to the wooden Bagaya Monastery renowned for its extraordinarily elaborate woodcarvings. Be sure to check out the Nanmyint Watch Tower. Next on the itinerary will be the city of Amarapura, Myanmar’s penultimate royal capital. Amarapura means “City of Immortality” Continue to Mahagandayon monastery, home to more than a thousand young monks and renowned to be a center for monastic study and strict religious discipline. Once the sun starts to set, you’ll want to stroll along the legendary U Bein Bridge, which was built in 1782 when Amarapura was the Royal center of attention. MANDALAY- YANKIN HILL

Start your day with a visit to the Mahamuni Pagoda. This pagoda houses one of the country’s most honored Buddha images, completely covered in gold leaves that are applied every day to the statue by male devotees. You will then proceed to Kuthodaw Pagoda, frequently dubbed as “The World’s Biggest Book” for its collection of 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist teachings. Directly south of Mandalay Hill, you will then visit the Kyauktawgyi Pagoda, known as the pagoda of the Great Marble Image. It is then off to the Shwenandaw Monastery, the Golden Monastery which is the only enduring structure from the Royal Palace of the 19th century. This impressive structure is celebrated for its remarkable woodcarvings. In the afternoon, you will travel east of the city center, leaving the buzz of the city behind while passing through rice fields and along small villages toward Yankin Hill. Meaning “away from danger. First we’ll stop in one of these monasteries where most of the 350 monks are studying English. From here, you will take a walk up the stairs to the top of Yankin Hill, you will be privileged to see panoramic views of Mandalay and its surrounding fields and mountains. Descending back to the monastery, you will arrive in time to see the monks as they say their evening chants. This spectacle is truly breathtaking as your “students” from the day perform one of their most important Buddhist rituals. You will return to the city center in the early evening. MANDALAY

MANDALAY- HEHO- PINDAYA- KALAW

You will drive to Mandalay airport and fly to Heho. Upon arrival, you will take the road to Pindaya (59 km – 2 hours), a quiet town on the banks of the serene Botoloke Lake. Visit the renowned Pindaya caves, a unique site housing thousands of Buddha images estimated to have been formed more than 200 million years ago. The opening of the cave will involve a walk past the Shwe U Min Pagodas – giant white stupas which climb out of the ground. You will also visit a small shop making Myanmar’s famous tea leaf salad from Pindaya’s tea plantations. After lunch, you will continue by road to Kalaw (48 km – 1,5 hour). You can expect to reach Kalaw in the middle of the afternoon, giving you enough time to look around and soak up the local atmosphere while you shake off the effects of the journey. After checking-in to your hotel, take a short orientation walk through the town, stopping to admire the colonial buildings, historic train station and numerous monasteries. Meals included: breakfast. KALAW, 1 NIGHT

KALAW-INLE BY TRAIN

You will drive to the train station for a train ride to Nyaung Shwe. During the trip, you will have the opportunity to admire the beautiful green landscapes and mountain in Shan State. You will disembark the train after a 3.5 hour-ride and continue by road to Nyaung Shwe. Upon reaching the edge of the lake, you will board a private motorboat and begin heading out onto Inle Lake. Along the way, you will pass several villages that are built on stilts over the lake, which is inhabited by the local Intha people. Observe the daily activities of the local leg-rowing fishermen and see their “floating gardens”.You will also visit Nga Hpe Chaung Monastery, which houses loads of early Shan Buddha Images. Proceed next to the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the lake’s main haven, which contains five sacred images of Buddha decorated in gold leaf. There are also many traditional crafts originating on Inle Lake and, should you wish, you can stop for a visit to one making incredible woven items from lotus silk, boat builders (depending on the time of year), a cigar making workshop, blacksmiths or even silver smiths. INLE LAKE, 2 NIGHTS

INLE LAKE- INDEIN

After breakfast, you’ll pay a visit to the lake’s morning market (note: the market is open every day apart from the dark moon and full moon calendar days). The market’s location rotates between the lake’s villages in a 5-day schedule. A 1-hour boat ride down a small canal will take you to the Pa-Oh village of Indein, positioned on the western shores of Inle Lake. Take a leisurely stroll around the village before ascending the moss-covered stairway to the top of a hill. Once you’ve arrived at the summit, you will also be rewarded with mesmerizing views of the placid surroundings. The Indein Pagoda complex is undoubtedly one of the most amazing sites around the shore of the lake and it consists of hundreds of small stupas which are overrun by moss and greenery. On your boat ride back, should time allow, you'll stop at the Intha Heritage House to learn more about the history and culture of the lake's indigenous people and enjoy a delicious coffee and cake (snack break not included).
