6 Days Lhasa Namtso Tour

This multi-day tour covers the major tourist sites such as the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Bakor Street and Sera Monastery in Lhasa. Visit one of the four sacred lakes in Tibet, Lake Namtso, which has an altitude of 4718m. Its stunning beauty is surrounded by magnificent views of the Nyenchen Thanglha snow-capped mountain range, which is a home to the Tibetan nomads that live in harmony with their animals and their natural environment.

Arrival in Lhasa

Your guide will meet you at the airport or train station and transfer you to your hotel. After check-in, enjoy some rest as the remains of the day is free for you to explore the city. Overnight stay will be at Lhasa Ganggyan Hotel.


Lhasa (B,D)

After breakfast you will first visit the Potala Palace, the winter palace of Dalai Lama. It has been used since the 7th century kings of Tibet. The most valuable collection consists of the gilded burial stupas of past Dalai Lamas and meditation Cave. Then, head to Jokhang temple which was founded by the 33rd great king of Tibet in the 7th century to promote the Buddhist religion. Around the temple winds Barkor Street where you can stroll along with pilgrims and locals and purchase souvenirs. Overnight stay will be at Lhasa Ganggyan Hotel. Read more


Lhasa (B)

After breakfast, visit Drepung monastery, one of the three great Gelug monasteries of Tibet, founded in 1416 by Jamyang Choge. The Ganden Palace was used as the Dalai Lama’s palace in Drepung before moving to Potala Palace. In the afternoon you will explore Sera Monastery, also one of the three great Gelug monasteries of Tibet, and founded in 1419 by Jamchen Chojey, one of the Tsongkhapa’s main disciples. Lhasa - Namtso Lake (B)

After breakfast, take a drive from Lhasa to Lake Namtso. On the way, you can see Nyenchen Thanglha (snow mountain ranges) and lots of nomads with yak and sheep grazing nearby. Namtso, the Heavenly lake, is one of the four holy lakes of Tibet and also the highest salt-lake. Take a very relaxing trek around lakeside and theTashi Island. Overnight will be at Namtso Guestroom. Namtso Lake and Yampachen

After breakfast, enjoy the morning by the lake shore and trek along to Tashi Dor Island to explore the meditation caves. After, take a drive to Dumxung to have lunch (at own expense). In the afternoon you may enjoy Yangpachen hot spring (optional) and both indoor and outdoor swimming pool filled with the hot spring's water. You will then head back to Lhasa, where you will stay at Lhasa Ganggyan Hotel. Read more

  • 1.Please note that you can only be allowed to enter Tibet with a Tibet Travel Permit and the local supplier will help you to obtain. Please send them your passport information. Passport must be valid at least 6 months and Chinese Visa 20 days prior to your traveling date.
  • 2.Please book at least 20 days in advance, because we need around 7-14 business days to process your Tibet permit. Any booking made after the time will not be confirmed.

Life-changing experience You hear a lot of cliches about how unique Tibet is but when you go you realise it's true. Right from when you get off the plane there is a special feeling in the air (literally, because you're 3,600m above sea level in Lhasa) and you suddenly feel a million miles away from the rest of the world. The people are so calm, open and friendly, and it's just fascinating to see a place where Buddhism (or indeed any religion) is so woven into the fabric of everyday life. The landscape throughout was the most breathtaking of any I've seen and, while there are a lot of monasteries to visit, each one has its own charm and surreal atmosphere so the equivalent of "temple fatigue" that you can get in a lot of East Asia doesn't really apply. One of the peculiarities of Tibet is that as a foreigner you are obliged to be accompanied by a licensed tour guide and a driver at all times and you need to be ready to produce your Tibet traveller's permit at various checkpoints and sites. This wasn't as onerous as I'd expected. They recommend you take at least a day to acclimatise to the altitude when you arrive. Turns out they're right. We arrived a day late due to flight delays and so launched straight into our itinerary. We were fine at first but the guide ended up needing to rush off to get a can of oxygen for my wife as we were walking around Lhasa and then later in the day I ended up in bed for a good 15 hours with what I would describe as a cross between the flu and the worst hangover of my life. Most people are fine though, as long as you take it easy to begin with. We did an 8-day tour with Tibet Vista, starting in Lhasa, then visiting Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse and Namtso Lake. You can do this as part of a tour group. My wife and I chose to form a 2-person "group“ of our own, which obviously works out more expensive but gives you more flexibility. The company were really helpful in setting up an itinerary for us (which you have to do before you arrive due to all the government controls). Our guide, Namgyal Gyap, deserves a special mention; couldn't recommend him more highly. Right from the start he encouraged us to ask as many questions as we wanted about Tibetan culture and history (note: you need to be mindful that you are putting local people in a potentially difficult position if you insist on talking about politics given the situation in Tibet). A devout Buddhist himself, Namgyal patiently explained the relationship between the different schools of Buddhism, the meaning of the various rites and features at the monasteries, and all manner of everyday stuff that we saw happening. He even helped translate for us when we wanted to ask an old monk a few questions, and taught us to meditate. He spoke good English and had an instinctive understanding of what we (I'm British, my wife's Chinese) might find difficult/interesting.
