It was one of a series of temples built in the places where the relic, the actual palladium of the Sinhalese monarchy, was brought following the various relocations of the capital city. The Temple of the Tooth, the palace complex and the holy city of Kandy are associated with the history of the dissemination of one of the most important religions of humanity, Buddhism. It is considered to be the finest view in all of Sri Lanka. The awesome escarpment drops vertically for about 4,000 feet, hence its name. You can also see the beautiful Bakers falls. (Walk is about 14 km) The park shelters mammals such as samburs, leopards, bears, monkeys and endemic lizards. The reserve covers 979 km², although only the original 141 km² are open to the public. Much of the reserve is parkland, but it also contains jungle, beaches, freshwater lakes and rivers and scrubland. The latter zone is punctuated with enormous rocky outcrops. The range of habitats gives rise to a good range of wildlife. Yala has the world's highest concentration of Leopards, although seeing this largely nocturnal carnivore still requires some luck. There are good numbers of Asian Elephants, crocodile, Wild Boar, Water Buffalo and Grey langurs amongst other large animals. The open parkland attracts birds of prey such as White-bellied Sea Eagle and the wetlands have waders, Painted Storks, and the rare Black-necked Stork. Landbirds of course are in abundance, and include Sirkeer Malkoha, Indian Peafowl and Sri Lanka Jungle fowl. Overnight stay – Tissamaharama/Yala Read more

DAY 11

Balapitiya and Madhu safari

Breakfast at the hotel. Afterwards free at leisure. In the late afternoon Afterwards proceed to Balapitiya and do a Madhu river boat safari. The estuary of the Madu Ganga river is a complex coastal ecosystem of mangroves and islands. It may be one of the last remaining tracts of pristine mangrove forests in Sri Lanka. A boat trip is a wonderful way of seeing some of the hundreds of species of plants and animals – monkeys eat fruit in the trees, a water monitor lizard glides slowly through the water, and cormorants, egrets and kingfishers wait patiently on the banks, eyeing the water for prey. There are around 64 islands in the river and lagoon, from a tiny speck housing a deserted shrine to one housing 250 families connected to the mainland with a very long footbridge. You can visit an island with a Buddhist monastery, where the friendly young monks will show you a 150-year-old book made of palm leaves and how they cook on cinnamon wood on an open fire. The main occupations of the local inhabitants are producing cinnamon and prawn fishing – if you take the trip in the evening you will see the fishermen in their canoes lighting lanterns to attract the shellfish into their traps. En route visit a Masks museum and factory at Ambalangoda. Over night at the hotel in Hikkaduwa/Beruwela. Read more

DAY 13

Trekking Sinharaja Rain Fore

Breakfast at the hotel. Afterwards proceed to trekking at the UNESCO World Heritage Sinharaja Rain Forest. Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a national park and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. It is of international significance and has been designated a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The hilly virgin rainforest, part of the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests Eco region, was saved from the worst of commercial logging by its inaccessibility, and was designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988. The reserve is only 21 km from east to west, and a maximum of 7 km (4.3 mi) from north to south, but it is a treasure trove of endemic species, including trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Because of the dense vegetation, wildlife is not as easily seen as at dry-zone national parks such as Yala. There are about 3 elephants and the 15 or so leopards which are rarely seen. The most common larger mammal is the endemic Purple-faced Langur. An interesting phenomenon is that birds tend to move in mixed feeding flocks, invariably led by the fearless Greater Racket-tailed Drongo and the noisy Orange-billed Babbler. Of Sri Lanka's 26 endemic birds, the 20 rainforest species all occur here, including the elusive Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal and Sri Lanka Blue Magpie. Reptiles include the endemic Green pit viper and Hump-nosed vipers, and there are a large variety of amphibians, especially tree frogs. Invertebrates include the endemic Common Birdwing butterfly. Overnight – Singharaja Read more

DAY 14

Colombo

Breakfast at the hotel Afterwards proceed to Colombo. On arrival free at leisure or do a city tour and shopping tour. Colombo (derived from Sinhalese name Kola-amba-thota which means "mango harbor", altered by the Portuguese to honor Christopher Columbus), is the cultural capital and largest city and commercial center of Sri Lanka. (The new administrative capital of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayawardenepura-Kotte.) Colombo was probably known to Roman, Arab, and Chinese traders more than 2,000 years ago. Muslims settled there in the 8th century and controlled much of the trade between Sinhalese kingdoms and the outside world. The Portuguese arrived in the 16th century and built a fort to protect their spice trade. The Dutch captured the city in the 17th century. The British made the city the capital of their crown colony of Ceylon in 1802 Sightseeing highlights include the Colombo National and Dutch period museums, new parliament houses, Buddhist Temple, Town Hall, and the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall. Dear Nilesh. I have just returned from the Colouricious Kashmir holiday. Could I thank you and your staff, not only for a wonderful holiday, but for all the rearrangements you made when we could not go to Srinagar. This must have involved a great deal of hard work and I wanted you to know how much we appreciated this. You were not obliged to do this and we were very grateful. We had a wonderful time in Jaipur and, as always with your company, everything was so well organised. Could I also take this opportunity to thank Amrik. He was amazing. His skill, his patience and professionalism, his concern for all of us and his calm demeanour meant that we all had the utmost confidence in him. This made the holiday a great pleasure for all of us, despite the change of plans. He maintained his good humour at all times and provided a wealth of information whenever we needed it. Thank you again to you and to all your staff. Please give my best wishes to Isha and I hope she is well. Above all my thanks and best wishes to Amrik. Your sincerely Jill Jordan (Margaret Jordan) Read more

Hello! After a few days of rest from the wonderful Gujarat trip Colouricious offered, I would like to take a moment of giving some feedback. Gautam was an excellent host/coordinator and expert on our trip. He has a unique ability to communicate with anybody, the Rabari nomads on the road, the British ladies, a small country Muslim community and more. He has built up many excellent relationships with so many people and it makes the trip more interesting. His pace of instruction and points of interest were spot on. There are so many memories, thankfully caught by camera to remind me of this trip. Here are but a few: . seeing the nomads on the road, with their children and tables on their camels . going to a small encampment of travellers where children were making beaded bracelets (great skills actually) . Seeing a cotton factory and talking to the owner! . Seeing a tribal dance at the Rann Riders and looking at the women's dress and jewellery . Seeing bells made and seeing a small community, I was particularly impressed with the community and how they interacted with a member of their community with autism. . Seeing a variety of weaving, one that included knots in the weavings. . Going to a embroiderers small house, where her daughter brought a jug of water on her head to the house. This woman was a character and her house was a warm inviting setting. These are but a few of my memories but just want to say you have a good leader in Gautam and he is an asset to your organisation. I'm looking forward to the February trip and want to thank all of you for all your hard work in organising memorable trips! Read more
