An in-depth journey throughout Myanmar that will take you among the wonders of the country, beginning in Yangon before heading to the dramatic Golden Rock, the breathtaking Mon State and the wetlands of Moe Yin Gyi. Head to Inle Lake’s shimmering waters. Travel to Mount Popa and then the dazzling array of stupas and dramatic scenery at the ancient Burmese capital of Bagan, before it’s time to head back to Yangon and the last look at this fabulous country.

Yangon Arrival

Arrival at Yangon International Airport. Transfer to Insein railway station to experience the circle train around Yangon. First immersion into the Burmese local life in the rural outskirts of the city. Arrival at Main Railway Station in Downtown and orientation tour by car inside the British colonial area renowned for its architecture. Transfer to hotel and check-in. Free time at the hotel. In late afternoon, head to the Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda to see a 70 meter long reclining Buddha statue and move onto visit the legendary Shwedagon Pagoda, the defining image of Yangon with its 100-meter stupa which is literally enclosed in over 40 tons of gold leaf and a symbol of Burmese identity. Yangon - Bago - Golden Rock

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Bago and visit the Kha Khat Wain monastery, and the thousand-year old Shwemawdaw Pagoda which features a spire taller than the one of Shwedagon Pagoda. After three hours, reach Kinpun camp near the Golden Rock, a massive boulder entirely covered in gold leaf and balanced on the edge of a jagged cliff. A vertical 11km road climb is made by truck, with another short walk to reach the summit. The Golden Rock here is rumored to actually balance on a single strand of Buddha's hair on the edge of a cliff. Overnight at the hotel. Read more

Golden Rock - Hpa An

Breakfast at the hotel. Return down to base camp by the same route by open-air truck. This afternoon, continue two hour drive by road to Hpa An, a small town surrounded by beautiful limestone rock formations and is the capital of the Karen state. En-route visit to Bayint Nyi Cave and Kaw Gun Cave. The former has a hot spring lake, from which you get a beautiful view of the temple complex and cave. Kaw Gun Cave is also fascinating, with over 2000 stone tablets with Mon inscriptions and hundreds of Buddha statues in the cave. Arrive in Hpa An and check in to your hotel. If you wish, take a leisurely walk on the road along Thanlyin River: a pretty scene with boats and mountain backdrops. Overnight at the hotel. Read more

Hpa An - Mawlamyine

Breakfast at the hotel. First stop will be Sadan Cave, full of Buddha images and even a reclining Buddha. On the way back to the cave, a natural tunnel comes into view. Follow the row of lights through the tunnel for about 15 minutes to get to the other side. Then reach the end through a natural tunnel for a gorgeous view of a hidden lake and meadow come into sight. From here, embark on a local boat for a tour around the lake and through another cave accessible only by boat. Then head off to see Zwe Kapin, one of many bizarre limestone formations in the area. At the foot of the mountain, head toward Lumbini Gardens to observe thousands of identical Buddha statues. Then continue to Kyauk Kalat Pagoda, a small stupa perched on top of a club-like rock formation on a small island in a lake. Continue the drive for one hour to Mawlamyine, the Mon State capital. Situated near the mouth of the Thanlwin River, this attractive town is surrounded by leafy, tropical areas and has a hilly ridge serving as a backdrop. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. Breakfast at the hotel. Spend today touring the sites of Mawlamyine. Start with colorful Mawlamyine central market, where miscellaneous items are sold. Proceed to Mahamuni Pagoda, built in traditional Mon-style, and Kyaikthanlan Pagoda, the city's tallest and most visible stupa. Continue to the beautiful Seindon Mibaya, a wooden monastery over 100 years old. Walk along the town’s Strand Road for a glimpse of the impressive Kaladan Mosque which was built during the colonial era when many Indians came to work for the British in Mawlamyine. This afternoon, board a private boat to visit Khaung Sae Kyun (Shampoo Island). It is said that Mon Kings used to came this place to announce water festival, then also make hair washing ceremony on the island. Come back to Mawlamyine and end up your tour at a view point to see the charming town of Mawlamyine together with the gorgeous view of Thanlwin River and Belu Island at the back drop during sunset time. Mawlamyine - Moe Yin Gyi

Breakfast at the hotel. Depart Mawlamyine for the drive towards Yangon. Arrive in Moe Yin Gyi wetlands by mid-afternoon. Moe Yin Gyi is a vital shelter for both resident and migratory waterfowl. A recent census revealed that there are 125 species of birds. The wetlands, designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1988, covers 40 square miles. The wetland is a permanent residence for 55 bird species. It has also become a primary migratory stop for millions of birds, around 70 species, traveling the East Asian-Australian Flyway. The area is also home to locals living off the wetlands, and a variety of other flora and fauna. This afternoon, take a boat excursion through the wetlands. Discover buffalo bathing in the shallow waters, see a vast number of birds and encounter local fisherman. Afterwards, explore around the resort on foot. Overnight at the resort. Read more

Yangon - Heho - Inle Lake

Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Yangon airport for your domestic flight to Heho airport in Shan State. Transfer by bus to Nyaung Shwe, the gateway to Inle Lake and stop to Shan umbrellas factory and Shwe Yin Pyay teak monastery en route. After lunch time, embark on local motorized pirogues to explore Inle Lake, a magical watery world. Pass several stilted Intha villages built over the lake, observe the local leg-rowing fishermen and see their floating gardens. Continue onto Phaung Daw U Pagoda, the lake’s main haven, which contains five sacred images of Buddha decorated in gold leaf. Transfer by boat to your hotel and check-in. Free time at the hotel. Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer by boat to visit the lake’s morning market, the location of which changes every day. The Intha and Paoh hilltribes sell their fresh products here. Continue by boat onto the Pa-Oh village of Indein, on the western shore of Inle Lake, enshrined among hundreds of stupa ruins and overgrown shrubbery. Head back to the lake and stop at the weaving village of Inpawkhone and a cheroot factory, where traditional Burmese cigars are handmade. Transfer by boat to your hotel. Free time at the hotel. Inle Lake - Heho - Bagan

Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Heho airport for your domestic flight to Nyaung U airport. Transfer by car to explore Nyaung U market, a colorful display of local products. From here, transfer by local trishaw to the golden stupa of Shwezigon Pagoda for a closer look at Bagan’s affluent past. Transfer to hotel and check-in after lunch time. Free time in early afternoon. Head to Ananda Temple, certainly one of Bagan’s most beautiful temples, housing two distinctive Buddha images. Their expressions transform, according to your viewing point. Bagan - Mt Popa - Bagan

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive for six hours drive to Mount Popa, an inactive volcano with amazing views. People travel here to worship the diverse spirits known as “nats,” with 777 steps up to the top of the mountain crest. Bagan - Yangon

Breakfast at the hotel before transfer to Nyaung U for morning flight to Yangon. Head to the city center for an orientation tour by cat in downtown and shopping time among the crafts of Bogyoke Market (closed on Mondays) if time allows. Transfer back to airport for international departure flight.
