Welcome to Costa Rica! Upon arrival at San Jose airport you will be welcomed by our representative who will escort you to your hotel in San Jose and give you your road book.

DOTA VALLEY

Meet up in the lobby with the car rental agency to collect your car. You will continue your journey toward the Dota Valley, a montagnous and rural area, famous among birdwatchers for being home to the shy Quetzal. This region is also crossed by the Savregre River, one of the cleanest rivers on the planet. Afternoon at leisure to enjoy the lodge or go explore the area on your own. Read more

SEEKING THE QUETZAL

Morning walk in seek of the Quetzal (with a local Spanish and English speaking guide). This very colorful bird, hard to breed in captivity, was also called the Snake bird by the precolombinan populations, due to the long and pointy feathers of its tail. Rest of the day at leisure to explore the area with an optional tour: Self-guided tour of the Quetzales National Park : it is one of the smallest National Park in the country, and it has been founded in order to protect the water tables and the forests of this area, being home of numerous endanger species such as the Quetzal. Guide hike in the « Paramo » of Buena Vista Peak : Buena Vista Peak is the second highest mountain in Costa Rica. During the hike you could see the different vegetation belts as altitudinal climatic variations. Guided birdwatching : The Dota Valley is considered on of the best birdwatching sport in the country. HIKE TO PROVIDENCIA DE DOTA

Meeting on the lobby of your hotel with your local guide. Start of a 12km hike through the breathtaking scenary of the Dota Valley. The trails are in good conditions. On the way you will cross a hanguing bridge over the Savegre River, one of the cleanest rivers in Central America! The path passes through a primary and secondary forest, with many altitude variations (between 2200 and 1700 meters), allowing to observ a wide range of wildlife. You will make stops to catch your breath and drink some water, before getting to the picturesque town of Providencia de Dota, where you could enjoy some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the country! During the hike the climate will be nice and fresh. Lunch in Providencia in a local restaurant, where the local guide for your next adventure will be waiting for you. He will take you to the household where you will have dinner and spend the night that day. Read more

HIKE THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS

Road transfer to the starting point of the hike. You will start a 14 km hike across primary and secondary forest with breathtaking views on the Savregre River valley. You guide will tell you about the secrets of the surrounding nature, and about local beliefs. Typical lunch on the way served in a banana leaf. You get to Betania, situated 900 meters in the middle of the forest, surrounded by hills and mountains. The view is particulary gorgeous at sun rise. DAY WITH A LOCAL FAMILY

Early morning start to San Isidro de Dota. 7 km hike. (4-5h environ) You get to San Isidro at midday, and get to spend the day at Rancho Tinamu with the Parra Family. In the evening, Santiago may play a little guitar. The lodge has neither eletricity nor hot water.

MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST

You will continue your journey to Monteverde, a little village situated on the mountainside of Tilaran Cordillera. Monteverde was founded by the Quakers that emigrated from the USA during the War against Vietnam in middle of the 20th century. They chose Costa Rica because they shared the country’s peaceful values. Rest of the day at leisure to enjoy the lodge facilities or go and explore the area. Hike in the Children's Eternal Rain Forest (Entrance fees: 12$ per pers. – guided tour with Spanish and English speaking guide : 30US$ per pers.): It is the largest private reserve of Costa Rica, with more than 20.000h of protected tropical forest situated in the Northeastern part of the country. This reserve exists thanks to the help of children and adults all over the world who took part the BEN movement, a fund-raising campaign, which started in Sweden and in the United States in 1987, and quickly spread all over the world. About 60 species of amphibian, 100 species of reptiles, 425 species of bird and 121 species of mammals are been identified in the reserve, about 50.5% of all terrestrial vertebrate species in Costa Rica. Forest night walk : A night walk in the forest is a magical experience during which you will witness the nighttime activities of the nocturnal animals. You will have to pad and stay quiet to observe the numerous mammals, birds, and reptiles that start their day when the sun is down. Zip-line : The canopy is a totally different way of discovering the forest. You will glide from tree to tree, accompanied by expert guides and safety equipment. ARENAL VOLCANO

You will continue northward to La Fortuna, a town situated on the foot of Arenal volcano, Costa Rica´s most famous one. Even if the Arenal Volcano activity decreased over the past 4 years, some clouds of smoke can still be seen going out of the crater when the sky is clear. Rest of the day at leisure to enjoy the lodge facilities, or go and explore the area by booking an optional tour in the area, like for example: Hike in Arenal Volcano National Park: Hike on the trails of the park, where you will see a lot a vegetal species such as the silk-cotton tree, a holy tree for the natives populations that believed the tree was a gate to heaven. You will also walk on a solidified lava flow from where you will enjoy a beautiful panoramic view both on Arenal Volcano and on Arenal Volcano’s lake. The Hanging Bridges : the bridges are situated in a 250Ha tropical forest private natural reserve. From the bridges you will have the best point of view on the forest canopy and on Arenal Volcano. The total length of the trails is 3km, where you will cross about 15 bridges. Climbing of Cerro Chato : It is a pretty rough trail across the forest that will lead you to the crater of this ancient volcano, where now lays a bright green lake. IMPORTANT: THIS ACTIVITY IS FOR HIKERS WITH A GOOD PHYSICAL CONDITION. La Fortuna River Waterfall : You will have to go down about 500 steps stair in the forest to arrive to the 70mt high waterfall. If the chilly water doesn’t stop you, you could enjoy a swim in the waterfall. Read more

A DAY IN AN LOCAL COMMUNITY

Spend a day in San Marcos de Cutris community! (with local Spanish and English speaking guide) Meet the Huetar indigenous community. They will tell you about heur origins, and they current life style. The famille Gamboa Alvarado will take you around their property, explain you how they run it, as well as how they process the wastes from the farm to create their own homemade and organic fertilizer. You will then learn how to cook typical handmade “tortillas” with the Vega Castro family, and have lunch with them. You will be back at the hotel in La Fortuna in the afternoon. Read more

You will leave Samara to head back to San Jose. Depending on the time you get to San Jose, you could visit the city center, the Gold Museum, the central market, or go outside of San Jose to visit the Poas Volcano National Park.

Off to Juan Santamaria International Airport for you flight back home. You will drop your car off at the car rental agency situated close to the airport. A free shuttle will take you to the airport.

C’est un merveilleux pays, une découverte et des rencontres fabuleuses. Si, le paradis existe il est au costa rica!! Les gens sont souriants, accueillants, chaleureux, pas stressés, réconfortants nous avons beaucoup aimé aussi leur responsabilité écologique : le moindre village a ses poubelles de tri, même si c'est un simple bidon. Quand nous étions perdu il y avait toujours quelqu'un pour nous indiquer le chemin, et même sans que nous le demandions. On ne ressent pas comme dans d'autres endroits que le touriste n'est qu'une manne financière. Nous avons même sauvé un petit oiseau qui s'appelle « el amigo del hombre » des griffes d'une vilaine fougère!! Read more
