This city remains a purely Arab city filled with outstanding examples of the finest Islamic architecture in Tunisia: visit the Great Mosque, the oldest place of worship in North Africa, and the zaouia - or tomb complex - of Sidi Sahab the Prophet´s companion. We will see the impressive pools in Aghlabid Basins. The possibility of visiting a handmade carpet workshop. Lunch and continuation to Monastir to visit the exceptional mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the first president of Tunisia. Departure to the capital of the Sahel, Sousse to visit the Medina. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1988. The city was an important commercial and military port during the 9th century and a typical example of a town dating back to the first centuries of Islam. After breakfast departure to El Jem (ancient Thysdrus) to visit the largest and most spectacular Roman amphitheater in North Africa and the best preserved one in the world. This colossal site (classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site 1979), which seems to have risen out of nowhere, was designed with a seating capacity for 30,000 people and is similar as Rome’s Coliseum. Continuation to Mahdia to visit this coastal town in which highlights its cemetery and the famous door Skifa el Kahla. Return to Sousse. After breakfast, departure to Hammamet and free time to explore the Medina and the outside of its impressive fortress, military work used for coastal defense. Then heading to Kerkouane (PM UNESCO 1985). This archaeological sites is the only one which dates back to the Punic period, possibly the sixth century B.C. After lunch, panoramic view of Haouaria. Breakfast and departure to Zaghouan to visit the Temple of the Waters. Continue to Testour, village of Andalusian origin. Panoramic tour of the famous clock of the Great Mosque. Lunch. Keeping on to the ruins of Dougga (Thugga, WH UNESCO 1997) to visit what are widely considered to be the best preserved ruins in all of Tunisia. In addition to Roman and Byzantine structures, Dougga also has a pre-Carthaginian mausoleum. The town was actually uninhabited until the 1950’s when the locals were relocated down the road to Nouvelle Dougga in an effort to preserve the ruins. Return to Sousse. Breakfast and departure to Tunis. Then spare time at the Medina (old town and W.H Unesco 1979). Next, visit to the Bardo Tunisia’s National Museum (except mondays) with its archaeological collections including the world’s largest one on Roman polychrome mosaics. It is housed in a 19th century Beylical palace. Departure to the ancient city of Carthage founded by a Phoenician princess, visiting Byrsa hill with its vestiges of Carthaginian and Roman buildings, and the Antonine Baths, a huge Roman bath complex on the edge of the Mediterranean. Lunch. Visit to Sidi Bou Said, andalous village, for a stroll through its narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses with blue shutters and doors. Return to Sousse.
