The Middle Sepik is the last remaining area where the crocodile skin cutting initiation is still practiced. The villages in this region are more accessible and not so far apart in terms of travel time than on the more remote Upper Sepik. These villages have stood firm against the invasion of Christianity. They still retain their Haus Tambarans and practice their traditional customs including the initiation and scarification of young “crocodile men”.

On the day before the show, there is the excellent Paiya village mini show, with a dozen groups that you can watch prepare and take photos of the entire preparation process.

All the villages included in our trip have been carefully chosen to offer a wide variety of distinctive cultural styles; including their extensive carved artifacts, both displayed and for sale, providing our visitors with interesting cultural contrasts and experiences. Lake Murray is the largest lake in Papua New Guinea. During the wet season it spreads to occupy an area of about 2000 square kilometers. It has a population of about 5,000 people scattered in small villages, both on tiny islands and coastal areas of the lake. Lake Murray Lodge arranges excursions around the lake in 8-seat river boats to local fishing spots. Lake Murray is known for its Black Bass, Barramundi and Saratoga fish.
