The Shira/Lemosho route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west. Rather than simply intersecting Shira Plateau (like Machame), Lemosho crosses it from Shira Ridge to Shira 2 Camp, in a pleasant hike. Climbers encounter low traffic until the route joins the Machame route. Afterwards, Lemosho follows the same route through Lava Tower, Barranco and Barafu, known as the southern circuit. There are several options to complete the trek over 7, 8, or 9 days bas

The Rongai Route is the only route to ascend up the North side of the mountain, originating close to the Kenyan border. It is one of the less frequently used routes, mostly attributed to the long drive required to reach the gate on day one. This has its advantages though, as it is less crowded and therefore a quieter way to ascend the mountain. It is also the only route to afford you such a close view of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro’s second highest peak, as you sleep under it on night three. This route meets up with the Marangu route upon descent, allowing climbers a different view of the mountain on the way down. Although Rongai climbers do not experience the rainforest on day one, they are given the chance on the final day of the trek before reaching the gate where the climb concludes.

Marangu is a term derived from the native Chagga language and the direct translation is “full of water”. This description corresponds with the luscious, green pastures and beautiful landscapes accordingly. The Marangu Route is highly frequented and it is the oldest route travelled. The Marangu Route is said to be the easiest way to the summit – it ascends gradually which allows for a generally effortless trek. It is the only route that approaches the Kilimanjaro from the southeast. The required time needed to complete the hike is 5 days experts recommend a 6th day for extra acclimatisation on the mountain. The accommodation sets this route apart from the others as there are dormitory style sleeping huts. Your own sleeping bag is required but the huts have relatively comfy mattresses and bunks. The Mandara and Kibo Huts can each accommodate 60 people and the Horombo Hut has 120 beds. The huts have communal dining halls and you will have an opportunity to purchase soda, bottled water and beer. The huts have basic washrooms that range from installed plumbing and running water at the lower huts to ‘long drop’ toilets and buckets of water at the Kibo Hut. The 5 days Marangu Route will always be the timeless trip to Africa’s rooftop, however, the other routes tend to provide more scenic variation.

The Lemosho route is one of the newer routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. The route begins in the west and rather than simply intersecting Shira Plateau (like Machame), Lemosho crosses it from Shira Ridge to Shira Camp. Climbers encounter low traffic until the route joins the Machame route. Afterwards, Lemosho follows the same route through Lava Tower, Barranco and Barafu, known as the southern circuit. Lemosho route allowing you to camp and fully appreciate the splendor of your surroundings and the clear night skies. The terrain changes as you ascend the mountain, passing through thick forest, moorland and scree en route to the highest point of the crater, Uhuru Peak. This is a challenging trek at altitude, climbing one of the most impressive and well-known mountains in the world. The minimum number of days required for this route is seven days, although eight days is ideal. Lemosho is considered the most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro and grants panoramic vistas on various sides of the mountain. It is our favorite route because it offers a great balance of low traffic, scenic views and a high summit success rate. Thus, Lemosho comes highly recommended.

The tightly packed trees with emerald sheaves line the foreground and in the backdrop the crown of Kilimanjaro’s stone ashen mountains with snow topped peaks make their presence known. The journey between transports you to the golden dunes of the desert and up the soft beds of the ice fields before reaching the summit. The scenic views of the landscapes are astounding. The 6 days Marangu Route is favoured by many due to the obvious nature of the path and its gradual incline increase. Are you willing to sacrifice the comfort of sleeping in a bed? Don’t fret, the Marangu Route is the only route that offers accommodation. The sleeping huts resemble dormitories and each bunk bed is equipped with a sponge mattress and pillow. Bathrooms and running water are available at the lower huts. Kibo uses a basic latrine system and buckets of water are available. The 6 days Marangu Route is highly recommended by experts due to the extra acclimatization day. All hikers eat their breakfast and evening meals in a dining hut and this creates an enjoyable, social atmosphere.

The Kilimanjaro Rongai Route trek begins in the remote, northern parts of Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border. We hike through true wilderness area towards the jagged Mawenzi Peak, then cross a barren desert saddle, before climbing up Kibo’s eastern crater wall. The Rongai route is a more gradual ascent, and is therefore preferred by those with little or no backpacking experience, but is equally enjoyable for even the most hardened trekkers.

ABOUT MARANGU ROUTE The Marangu route and this has led potential climbers to think that it is an easy route to the summit. The fact that it requires a minimum of 6 days to complete it does not mean that it is easier than any other route. The only reason that people say it is easier is because it is the only route up Kilimanjaro where you sleep in huts as opposed to tents. An optional acclimatization day at Horombo Huts is highly recommended.

Machame route is one of the highest summit success rates given the topography and nature of the route which allows climbers to “trek high & sleep low” hence making it a more favorable route for acclimatization. This route offers some of the most spectacular scenery while on the mountain. The Machame route starts in the south west side of the mountain and proceeds steeply north, traversing the Shira plateau and eventually joining the Shira and Lemosho

Machame ("Whiskey") Route is also known as the "Whiskey" route, the Machame route is now the most popular route on the mountain. Compared with Marangu, the days on Machame are longer and the walks are steeper. The Machame route is considered a difficult route, and is better suited for more adventurous folks and those with some hiking or backpacking experience. The minimum number of days required for this route is six days, although seven days is recommended. The Machame route is scenically beautiful and varied. However, due to the heavy crowds, it loses some of its spendor.
